Synopsis

When two young brothers attempt to resurrect their dead mother using alchemy, it goes about as badly as you'd imagine. Edward Elric loses an arm and a leg, his younger brother Alphonse loses his entire body — his soul gets bound to a suit of armor just to keep him alive. Now Edward, the youngest State Alchemist in the military at age 15, and a seven-foot suit of armor with a kid's voice are searching for the Philosopher's Stone to get their bodies back. That's the setup for a 64-episode TV series that somehow keeps escalating without ever losing its footing. The world of Amestris runs on a detailed alchemy system where everything costs something — the Law of Equivalent Exchange — and the story actually respects its own rules. Studio Bones brought their A-game with the animation, and the fights hit hard, but what keeps you watching is how the show balances genuine emotional weight with a sprawling military conspiracy that pulls in dozens of characters who all feel like they matter. The soundtrack by Akira Senju does a lot of heavy lifting in the emotional department too. If you liked D.Gray-man's blend of dark fantasy and action, or Baccano's knack for weaving together a huge cast into a single story, Brotherhood does both of those things across a longer runtime without filler dragging it down. It's one of those rare shounen series where the ending actually lands.
