I was so shocked to see Gluttony actually crying over Lust because it makes those monsters feel almost human and then Envy shows up being totally cold and heartless as usual

That moment when Roy told Havoc he was leaving him behind so he could catch up later was actually such a powerful way to handle that retirement scene, and it felt way more motivating than just being sad about the injury, while seeing Ed and Al put on that ridiculous show with the flashy alchemy in the streets was hilarious and it really lightened the mood before the actual fight started

Scar returning to Central makes everything so much more complicated and the way Ed used deconstruction to match his attacks was a smart tactic that showed how much he learned

The theory about Ed and Al having their souls tangled is so tragic and it makes me feel for Ed because he is literally carrying the physical weight of two people at once

You can really tell how serious things are getting when even the military radio is being used for a massive distraction, and that fight between the Xing group and Gluttony was brutal

Seeing Havoc have to give up and retire because of his spine was heartbreaking because he was such a cool character and Roy looked so devastated even if he tried to hide it

Mustang acting like a goof on the radio while Ed and Al are literally fighting for their lives against Scar was hilarious and the fool bait plan was actually pretty clever

I still cannot believe Ed is basically eating and sleeping for Al and it explains why he is so short and always tired plus that ending with Gluttony vs the Xing crew was so stressful to watch

Ling sensing that Gluttony is not even human was such a cool moment and he and Lan Fan are so much faster than anyone else we have seen fight so far

Ling and Lan Fan showing up and sensing the homunculi is such a game changer for the team. That fight on the rooftops against Gluttony was crazy intense because of how he regenerates

My heart actually broke when Mustang told Havoc he would leave him behind just to push him to keep trying. I really hope Ed finds a way to fix his legs with alchemy

I feel so bad for Havoc and hearing him say he is retiring actually hurt my soul. Mustang acting all tough just to hide how much he cares about his men is too much

Watching Ed do random chores with alchemy just to bait out a serial killer is actually hilarious. You can tell he is trying so hard to be noticed

Scar jumping Ed and Al in the alleyway was so stressful because they were holding back to lure out the others. Ed using the deconstruction alchemy to stop Scar's arm was a smart move

I was actually laughing when Ed and Al started doing those super flashy alchemy tricks in the middle of the street because it was so dramatic. But then the whole theory about Ed not growing because his body is keeping Al alive just really got to me, and it explains why he sleeps so much and why Winry is always mad about the milk

Seeing Gluttony cry over Lust made those monsters feel way too human and it was super uncomfortable to watch. Envy is a total jerk for how he treated him while he was mourning

Scar being the one who killed Winry's parents is such a massive bomb to drop right when the brothers have to use him as bait

Gluttony crying over Lust like a little kid while Envy just watches him with that disgusting look on his face was super unsettling

I was not ready for the look on Ed's face when he realized Scar killed Winry's parents, that realization is going to change everything about how they handle him

EPISODE CONTEXT

Coming off the emotional and revelatory 'Father Before the Grave,' where the Elric brothers confronted painful truths about their family and the Philosopher's Stone, episode 21 channels that knowledge into decisive action — the brothers shift from seekers to schemers. This episode serves as a critical pivot point roughly a third into the series, escalating the conflict with the Homunculi from investigation to direct confrontation, and its consequences feed directly into 'Backs in the Distance,' where the fallout of this gambit begins to materialize.
