This episode introduces a new character as well as another important piece of lore that explains his motivations. Also, it profoundly shows how recent events have emotionally affected Edward and Alphonse, providing some solid character development on top of the world-building.

Scar is terrifying when he just disintegrates the automail and you realize how high the stakes are after what happened to Nina

Watching Mustang get called useless in the rain by Hawkeye is the only thing that made me smile after that heavy opening

Major Armstrong is such a weirdly great character, and his style of fighting Scar is the exact kind of energy this show needed after such a depressing week

I still feel sick after the Shou Tucker stuff and now seeing Ed try to give up his life for Al just broke me because they have already lost so much already

Mustang trying to use his sparks in the pouring rain was actually pretty funny despite the dread of Scar stalking them and Hawkeye is the only person with common sense there

Seeing Scar just dismantle the armor and Ed's arm like that was terrifying and his background with the Ishvalan war makes everything so much darker than before

The mention of State Alchemists being used as weapons for genocide makes the military seem way more suspicious and Scar's anger feels way more grounded now

My heart dropped when Al shouted at Ed for being a coward because it showed how much more emotional strength the younger brother actually has when things get desperate

hearing about the military basically being used for genocide in ishval makes everything feel so much darker and you can kind of see why scar is doing what he does even if it is terrifying

Mustang trying to look cool in that alleyway only to get kicked into a trash can for combustible waste, it really made me feel embarrassed for him.

May Chang offering to just put the scar back on his face after he had a total meltdown was hilarious because he was so dramatic about it

It was so funny how Breda was just ignoring the murder investigation because he wanted to complain about Maria having too much muscle

you can really tell how much weight the brothers are carrying when edward actually stops fighting and just waits for the end because he thinks he failed alphonse

Seeing Scar just deconstruct everything with a touch is terrifying, but hearing why he hates State Alchemists makes the whole situation so much more complicated than a simple hero vs villain fight.

the way the homunculi are just watching edward and calling him a sacrifice makes the whole journey feel like they are just walking into a trap

It was genuinely hard to watch Edward just break down like that in front of Scar and offer his own life. You usually expect the hero to find a way out, but he just looked so small and defeated. Then Al had to step in and yell some sense into him and it reminded me why their bond is the heart of this show.

Scar getting so worked up over a tiny panda after everything he did in Ishval was the weirdest thing ever

EPISODE CONTEXT

Episode 5 lands directly after the devastating Tucker-Nina incident, making it a crucial emotional pivot point in the early stretch of the series. It introduces a major recurring antagonist and begins redefining the stakes beyond personal tragedy into systemic conflict. This episode also sets up the brothers' return journey to Resembool for repairs, transitioning the narrative from Central's darkness toward the next phase of their quest.
