I keep thinking about how Father used to be a little shadow in a bottle and now he looks exactly like Hohenheim because of that blood exchange in Xerxes it makes their whole connection feel so much more twisted

Watching the whole country of Xerxes get wiped out just so a little black puffball in a bottle could get a body was actually horrific and the piles of corpses left behind were just too much

I was not prepared for the Hohenheim backstory because seeing him as a simple slave who just wanted to learn was so sad, and that little shadow thing in the flask was incredibly creepy with how it played him and the transition from a bustling kingdom to a graveyard was haunting and it makes his journey feel so much heavier

My skin crawled when Riza gave Roy that coded message about Selim being a homunculus and seeing Roy lose his composure for a second made the threat feel so real

The dwarf in the flask was so manipulative and watching it trick a whole kingdom into dying just so it could have a body was unsettling and poor slave 23 was clueless

Seeing Xerxes get wiped out in a single night was brutal, and Hohenheim waking up to a field of corpses really puts his whole lonely existence into perspective

The exposition dump about the origins of the stone and Xerxes was necessary but it felt like a lot of talking in one go and slowed down the momentum from the Briggs stuff

I finally understand what Hohenheim actually is and it makes his whole life feel so much more tragic than I ever imagined and the part where he helped Izumi breathe again was actually really sweet because it shows he isn't the monster everyone thinks he is even if he is basically a walking graveyard and seeing him finally get some respect felt good

My heart broke for Hohenheim when he woke up in those ruins alone and he has been carrying those souls for hundreds of years and I finally get why he is so miserable

My heart broke for Slave 23 because he just wanted to be a person with a name and instead he got turned into a living battery by that creepy thing in the flask

I am still shaking after that Selim reveal because that kid always creeped me out but I never thought he was a homunculus and the way Roy and Riza talked in code was so cool

That map at the end showing all the bloody history of the country forming a giant circle makes everything feel so hopeless and urgent for the Elric brothers now
kaworu_nagisa's avatar

I used to think Hohenheim was just a deadbeat dad but seeing him wake up in those ruins alone with all those bodies made me feel so bad for him, he never asked for any of this

Olivier walking into Bradley's office and admitting she killed Raven just to take his seat is actually insane and she really is the most terrifying person in this entire show
izayoi_259's avatar

The dwarf in the flask is such a manipulative jerk for what he did to the king and the people of Xerxes just to get a human body that looks like Hohenheim
kuchisake_onna_52's avatar
kuchisake_onna_52
It was so sad seeing Hohenheim as a young slave named number twenty-three, and realizing he was basically just a pawn for that shadow creature to gain a body and destroy his home
edward_elric_115's avatar

Xerxes getting wiped out in a single night was haunting, and knowing Hohenheim has been carrying all those souls inside him this whole time explains so much about his character
jonakra's avatar

Hohenheim helping Izumi was such a nice moment especially since she has been suffering for so long and then the ending where they show the map of Amestris is genuinely terrifying because it means every single war and tragedy was planned from the start just to set up another massive ritual like the one that destroyed Xerxes all those years ago
grusha's avatar

You really see how much of a threat the military is now that every major battle site is just a part of a massive countrywide transmutation circle across the whole country
erica_brown's avatar

Olivier Armstrong really walked into the lions den and told Bradley she killed Raven and then asked for his job and she is easily the most intimidating person in this entire show

EPISODE CONTEXT

Arriving at the series' midpoint, episode 40 pivots sharply from the escalating political conspiracies and battlefield tensions of recent episodes to excavate the deep history underlying it all. The preceding stretch intensified the Elric brothers' entanglement with the military's darkest secrets, and this episode provides the ancient context that makes those revelations hit harder. Everything established here becomes the narrative bedrock for the final act's escalation toward the series' climax.
