pierce★★★☆☆EP 1I checked this out because of the history behind it and the awkward tension between Ami and Hiroshi is actually written pretty well
Arguably the most notorious anthology OVA in anime history, Cream Lemon arrived in 1984, basically where adult anime figured out what it wanted to be. Across 38 episodes, it cycles through wildly different genres: soap opera drama, sci-fi, horror, fantasy, and parody, all under one very adult umbrella. The opening story follows Ami, a high school girl left alone with her stepbrother Hiroshi when their parents head out of town. What starts as ordinary domestic tension slowly reveals itself as something much more complicated and deliberately uncomfortable. That first episode sets the tone for what the whole series does: it leans into taboo territory without flinching, treating heavy subject matter with a dramatic sincerity that feels oddly earnest for what it is. The anthology format means each episode is essentially its own short film, which keeps things from getting repetitive even when the themes overlap. If you've watched something like La Blue Girl or Urotsukidōji: Legend of the Overfiend and want to understand where that whole era of adult anime came from, this is genuinely the origin point. The classic 80s animation has a rough, hand-drawn texture that later polished productions lost entirely. Don't go in expecting a plot-driven narrative. this is more like a time capsule of what creators were experimenting with before the genre had any rules. Historically significant, undeniably explicit, and stranger than you'd expect.

pierce★★★☆☆EP 1I checked this out because of the history behind it and the awkward tension between Ami and Hiroshi is actually written pretty well
dialga★★★★☆EP 1The vintage look has a lot of charm and the way they animated the physical stuff is surprisingly detailed for something from the early eighties
kirito_kensei★★★★☆EP 1Seeing them get separated at the end was actually kind of sad and the angst in the script feels way more intense than anything in modern shows
jet_black_177★★☆☆☆EP 1I was definitely not ready for that shower scene and now I see why people still talk about it forty years later because that was a choice
lille_xrays★★★★☆EP 1You can really feel the guilt Ami has over her feelings for Hiroshi and it makes the whole thing feel way more like a real drama than just some random adult video
tulip★★★★☆EP 1seeing where the whole ova boom started is fascinating and they really went all in on the controversy with that brother and sister dynamic right from the jump
roswaal_rogue_146★★★☆☆EP 1the pacing feels a bit slow by today's standards but the grit of the visuals during the big scene at the end really sells the historical weight of it
blastoise_303★★★★☆EP 1i think the hand drawn style makes the whole encounter feel way more gritty and seeing ami nonomura for the first time explains why she became such an icon
erica_brown★★★★☆EP 1It is strange seeing such a dramatic tone for a story like this, but the way Ami is introduced really makes her stand out among other characters from that era.
rickert_the_smith★★★☆☆EP 1watching this makes you realize how far things have come since eighty four and that step brother plot is still just as shocking today as it probably was back then
pikachu_302★★★★☆EP 1the rough textures in these old cells really make the character designs pop and you can tell they were trying to do something different with the adult animation here
enenra_enigma_53★★★★☆EP 1my head is spinning after seeing what passed for entertainment in eighty four because that scene with ami and hiroshi in the house alone was just something else
naruto_ninja★★★☆☆EP 1the way it handles the step sibling drama is pretty uncomfortable even for the eighties and it definitely does not hold back on the weirdness
viral_187★★★☆☆EP 1this feels like such a time capsule and that hand drawn animation from the eighties has a texture you just do not see anymore even if the story is super taboo
shinji_ikari_180★★★★☆EP 1I finally sat down to see where this whole genre started and it is wild how much effort went into the art for something this controversial. Ami is a lot more complex than I expected for a debut episode, and seeing the way she interacts with Hiroshi while their mother is away really sets a specific mood for the series.
eri_359★★★★☆EP 1My head was spinning when Ami just went for it while the house was empty
puck_paws★★★☆☆EP 1It is wild how this started a whole genre, especially seeing Ami and her brother together like that in a 1980s show.
anya_alstreim★★★★☆EP 1The old animation style makes the taboo stuff feel even more gritty and strange than modern shows
rosa_sisters_276★★★★☆EP 1I hated when they forced Hiroshi to leave Ami at the end because they actually seemed like they cared about each other
fish_eye★★★☆☆EP 1Seeing Ami and Hiroshi hide their relationship while their mom was out felt so tense and weird
