The doppelgänger theme is handled so well, and the rhythmic gymnastics backdrop makes the whole thing feel way more surreal

My skin was crawling when that shadow version of her appeared and I did not expect it to get that intense

That horror mixing with the gymnastics scenes felt so bizarre and the pendant stuff was really dark

Urushihara design work is so easy to spot and it is wild that this was actually his debut

I was so creeped out by that mirror scene and the way Mami looked at her own reflection was actually terrifying

the transition from a standard sports theme to that dark black widow atmosphere is jarring and makes the ending stick with you

the foundational style of this animation is so clear when mami is in motion and the shadow stuff looks great for the era

I grew up hearing about how this series started everything for the genre, and watching Mami basically play a corrupted Hikari Kamijo was a trip. The way they blended the sports girl trope with the actual haunting was really unsettling, and I definitely prefer this darker supernatural direction over the standard comedy stuff they usually put out in the other volumes

seeing a passionate sports girl archetype thrown into a weird supernatural horror scenario is such a bizarre 80s move and it works

the supernatural stuff in the second half made me forget i was watching an anthology series and the visuals for the ghosts were surprisingly solid

The Pandora trilogy branding makes sense for this, because the horror vibe is way stronger than the usual sci-fi or comedy stuff they do

mami looks exactly like she stepped out of hikari no densetsu and it makes the sports girl stuff feel like a weird parody of a classic shojo

you dont even need to watch the rest of the series because this works as its own creepy little story about mami

i really liked the moody atmosphere in this one and the 80s art style gives the horror elements a very specific retro feel

that supernatural turn is a shock and the white shadow concept brings a creepy energy that usually isnt in these shorts

my favorite thing was the atmosphere at the start and the way the sci-fi elements blended into the supernatural stuff felt very unique for an 80s production

you can really tell why they made an art book for this episode because the visual design of the white shadow world is incredibly trippy and detailed

The animation holds up surprisingly well for an old OVA, especially that sequence where the shadows start moving on their own and Ami realizes something is wrong

i was totally surprised by the fantasy turn it took halfway through and seeing ami in a different setting than usual was a nice change of pace for this series

It is a bit confusing how this fits with the other episodes but the colors are so bright and vivid that it stays interesting anyway

EPISODE CONTEXT

At episode 18 of 38, White Shadow sits exactly at the series' midpoint — a stretch where Cream Lemon's anthology format tends to diversify its tonal range most aggressively. Each episode in this series is narratively independent, so no prior episode directly sets this one up and nothing here carries forward as plot continuity. Viewers can treat White Shadow as a standalone entry without context from surrounding episodes.
