I checked this out because of the history behind it and the awkward tension between Ami and Hiroshi is actually written pretty well

The vintage look has a lot of charm and the way they animated the physical stuff is surprisingly detailed for something from the early eighties

Seeing them get separated at the end was actually kind of sad and the angst in the script feels way more intense than anything in modern shows

I was definitely not ready for that shower scene and now I see why people still talk about it forty years later because that was a choice

You can really feel the guilt Ami has over her feelings for Hiroshi and it makes the whole thing feel way more like a real drama than just some random adult video

seeing where the whole ova boom started is fascinating and they really went all in on the controversy with that brother and sister dynamic right from the jump

the pacing feels a bit slow by today's standards but the grit of the visuals during the big scene at the end really sells the historical weight of it

i think the hand drawn style makes the whole encounter feel way more gritty and seeing ami nonomura for the first time explains why she became such an icon

It is strange seeing such a dramatic tone for a story like this, but the way Ami is introduced really makes her stand out among other characters from that era.

watching this makes you realize how far things have come since eighty four and that step brother plot is still just as shocking today as it probably was back then

the rough textures in these old cells really make the character designs pop and you can tell they were trying to do something different with the adult animation here

my head is spinning after seeing what passed for entertainment in eighty four because that scene with ami and hiroshi in the house alone was just something else

I finally sat down to see where this whole genre started and it is wild how much effort went into the art for something this controversial. Ami is a lot more complex than I expected for a debut episode, and seeing the way she interacts with Hiroshi while their mother is away really sets a specific mood for the series.

this feels like such a time capsule and that hand drawn animation from the eighties has a texture you just do not see anymore even if the story is super taboo

the way it handles the step sibling drama is pretty uncomfortable even for the eighties and it definitely does not hold back on the weirdness

It is wild how this started a whole genre, especially seeing Ami and her brother together like that in a 1980s show.

I hated when they forced Hiroshi to leave Ami at the end because they actually seemed like they cared about each other

Seeing Ami and Hiroshi hide their relationship while their mom was out felt so tense and weird

EPISODE CONTEXT

As the very first episode of a 38-episode anthology series, 'Be My Baby' carries the full weight of first impressions — there is nothing preceding it, and it exists entirely to establish the foundational emotional grammar of the Ami storyline. It sets the relational dynamics between Ami and Hiroshi that subsequent entries in her arc will continue to develop and complicate. Viewers starting here are getting the intended entry point for understanding who these characters are before the series pushes those boundaries further.
