It is wild how this jumps from being a high budget sci-fi parody to some of the most uncomfortable adult tropes you can find in eighties anime

The mecha action is genuinely impressive, but my brain can't get past that ending where she suddenly likes the guy

Those character designs look exactly like the project a-ko girls and the energy in the space battle scenes is way higher than any other episode in this series

I am stuck on how the ending tries to make the sexual assault into a joke and it definitely leaves a weird taste after how good the space fight animation looked

The mecha animation is actually insane for an old school ova and seeing those Hideaki Anno explosions really makes it feel like a prototype for big action movies later on

This stands out so much compared to the other episodes because the sci-fi world feels fleshed out and the action stays high energy the whole time

I still find it hilarious that Hideaki Anno and Hiroyuki Kitakubo worked on this, because the animation is actually incredible for a parody. The sci-fi setting feels like a proto-Project A-Ko and I kept getting distracted by how good the mechanical designs looked. It is such a strange artifact of that era where top talent just made whatever they wanted

The slapstick comedy during the chase scenes is genuinely funny and it makes the adult content feel almost secondary to the chaos happening on screen

I was stunned during the chase sequences, because I really wasn't expecting this level of fluid animation from a random eighties hentai OVA

You can see the future of Gainax in those mechanical details and the way things blow up is pure Anno through and through

It is weird how you get these intense action scenes followed by really explicit stuff and the tonal shifts are enough to give you whiplash

I saw those explosions and immediately knew it was Anno because that specific style of destruction is so recognizable even in an old ova like this one

You can really tell the animation budget went into those action scenes and the fluid movement is surprising for something this trashy

This feels like a dirty version of Project A-Ko and the energy in the comedy is just as chaotic even with all the explicit stuff mixed in

Seeing a western sci-fi setting in this series was such a change of pace and Kitakubo really brought a different energy to the whole production

I was mostly just impressed by how punchy the effects looked during the chase scenes and knowing it was Kitakubo debut makes a lot of sense given how much style he has

The mecha parody stuff is genuinely funny and the way the action sequences flow makes it stand out from the other cheaper looking episodes in this series and it moves so fast

That ending where she just falls for the guy after everything was definitely a choice that has not aged well even if they were trying to make it a joke for the climax

ubagabi_usurper_93
You can really tell this was a precursor to Project A-ko with all the slapstick and sci-fi nonsense happening every few minutes and it feels way different than the usual dark stuff

I stayed for the credits because the movement in those mecha fights was crazy fluid and I cannot believe Hideaki Anno actually worked on this hentai project under a fake name

EPISODE CONTEXT

Following Episode 3's fantasy-driven SF Super Dimensional Legend Rall, Pop Chaser marks a deliberate tonal pivot, signaling that Cream Lemon operates as an anthology with each episode capable of standing entirely on its own. This self-contained story introduces no carry-over plot threads, functioning as a comedic palate cleanser at the early stage of the series' 38-episode run. Its standalone nature reinforces the anthology format fans should expect throughout the season.
