The whole step siblings thing is super awkward and it is hard to get past that even if the drawings are nice and the atmosphere is heavy

I was not ready for how pretty the animation was in this episode, especially considering it is from eighty-four. The tension between Ami and Hiro feels way more intense than I expected because the lighting and the music do so much heavy lifting. It is definitely dated in terms of the plot, but those city night shots are just gorgeous

That opening sequence with the music and the city lights set the mood perfectly and Ami being so bold caught me off guard because she seems so innocent at first

Hiro is such a mess and the way he reacts to Ami staying over is uncomfortable but the 80s aesthetic makes it feel like a different world and I like that

I think the art style in Escalation is so much better than modern stuff and that scene where Ami looks at Hiro through the door really sold the tension for me

That scene where Rie first enters the mansion is such a mood shift and the way the show uses the religious setting to frame all that deviance is actually pretty smart

The whole atmosphere at Naomi sempais mansion is so unsettling, especially when you consider these girls are supposed to be at a strict school. Seeing Midori and Mari get caught up in that s and m madness was a lot to take in and it really establishes how dangerous Naomi is as a character before things get even worse later on

You can tell this was made in the eighties by how grainy the visuals are but the sheer audacity of the yuri content in the mansion is still shocking today

The animation is so rough it almost looks like a different show but the way Naomi treats Midori and Mari is so cold it still works

I was surprised by how much the escalating tension between Rie and Naomi actually mattered beyond the explicit stuff and it makes the ending feel a lot heavier

It is crazy how this old ova just dives straight into the s and m stuff without holding back at all and the catholic boarding school backdrop makes the whole thing feel extra forbidden

Watching Rie get dragged into Naomi sempais games is rough but it really sets the stage for the rest of this story and that 80s art style is definitely an acquired taste

The bdsm stuff at the mansion is way more intense than anything else from that era and the psychological pressure on Rie is actually pretty dark

My skin was crawling during the mansion scenes, because Naomi is genuinely terrifying when she starts targeting the other girls

I cannot believe how far they went with the Naomi scenes and it feels so weird seeing this stuff in a catholic school setting

I found the psychological manipulation Naomi pulled on Rie to be way more intense than I expected for an older series, and it feels like the episode is more about building up this toxic atmosphere than actual plot. The 80s aesthetic makes the whole school setting feel incredibly bleak and watching Rie get trapped was genuinely uncomfortable

That piano scene with Rie was actually kind of beautiful until the rest of the episode happened and Naomi started treating people like tools

The rough hand drawn look of this 80s animation has so much more personality than modern stuff and it makes the weird psychological games between Midori and the others feel way more grimy

I cannot believe how dark this got so fast with the S and M stuff at a Catholic school and watching Rie fall for a trap was crazy

Rie is such a talented pianist and seeing Naomi just completely manipulate her like that is wild for something from 1984 because the school setting feels so suffocating

EPISODE CONTEXT

Coming directly after 'Be My Baby,' which establishes the anthology format through Ami Nonomura's story, this episode confirms that Cream Lemon operates as a series of self-contained narratives rather than a continuous plot. Rie's storyline has no direct connection to the premiere, signaling to viewers that each installment brings entirely new characters and settings. This episode effectively sets the template for how the remaining 36 episodes function — distinct, standalone explorations with no expectation of continuity.
