Pokémon Journeys: The Series
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Two decades of the Pokémon anime built a comfortable formula, but this series finally shakes it up in a way that actually matters. Ash Ketchum isn't locked into one region anymore — he and his new partner Goh travel across every region we've seen before, from Kanto to Galar, chasing down Pokémon research for Professor Cerise's lab. The setup kicks off when both kids independently chase a Lugia sighting at Vermilion City harbor and end up riding on its back together, which is exactly the kind of ridiculous first meeting that bonds people for life. What makes this one different from the usual Pokémon cycle is the dual protagonist thing. Ash is still the battle-obsessed trainer he's always been, but Goh is more of a collector — his whole deal is catching every Pokémon species, with Mew as his ultimate goal. Their contrasting approaches give the show a rhythm that keeps it from feeling like the same gym-badge grind. The animation from OLM is noticeably sharper too, with battle sequences that have real weight and fluidity to them. At 136 episodes, it's a commitment, but the region-hopping format means you're not stuck in one place long enough to get bored. If you grew up on Digimon Adventure or Monster Rancher and miss that feeling of kids exploring a world full of creatures, this scratches that itch while feeling genuinely modern. It's a good entry point even if you dropped off the Pokémon anime years ago.
