Synopsis
Ten-year-old Ash Ketchum oversleeps on the most important day of his life and ends up with the one Pokémon nobody wanted, a Pikachu that refuses to listen to him and would rather electrocute him than cooperate. That's how Ash Ketchum's dream of becoming a Pokémon Master begins, and honestly, the shaky start is what makes it work. After nearly getting torn apart by a flock of angry Spearow, Ash and Pikachu reach an understanding, and from there it's 276 episodes of catching creatures, gym battles, and run-ins with Team Rocket, a trio of villains so incompetent they loop back around to being genuinely endearing. Ash picks up traveling companions along the way, starting with Misty, who's mostly following him because he wrecked her bike. The dynamic between the cast keeps things moving even when the formula is predictable, and the creature designs are still some of the most iconic in animation. The tone is comedic and action-packed without ever getting heavy; it's comfort viewing that holds up surprisingly well. If you grew up with Digimon Adventure or Yu-Gi-Oh, this is the one that started the whole creature-collecting anime wave in the late '90s. Even Beyblade owes it something. Studio OLM gave it a bright, clean look that aged better than you'd expect from 1997. It's not deep, but it's not trying to be. It's a kid chasing a dream with a stubborn electric mouse, and that's enough.

Enjoyed the episode, but gotta admit, the previous ep felt like more of a conclusion. But anyway, Hoenn here we come!
Ash finally beating Gary felt like an ending in of itself. I love how he thinks outside the box in his battles, managing to beat a Blastoise with his Charizard. W episode!
Early pokemon had a lot of heart. caterpie just wanted to be friends with Misty and kept getting rejected. Kinda felt bad for caterpie tho not gonna lie.
After leaving the hospital healthy, Ash, Pikachu, and Misty prepare for their next adventure, unaware that many things would happen, besides catching more Pokémon and having more Pokémon battles.
Love how this episode shows that even when alone, Ash's friends will always be with him!
Good
As a massive Pokémon fan, seeing Jigglypuff's debut in Neon Town is unforgettable. The running gag of its beautiful singing voice putting everyone to sleep, followed by its hilarious marker tantrums, is pure classic anime gold. This episode perfectly captures the chaotic charm of the original Kanto era.
The original series had a charm where even gym leaders felt like actual people instead of just bosses waiting to be beaten. Brock's introduction is still one of my favorites in my opinion.
Looking back I appreciate how the original series spent time on smaller encounters like this. Not every episode needed a gym battle. The Samurai was goofy, but he made the world feel bigger.
The moment ash starts caring more about pikachu than himself is what sold me on this series. The introduction of team rocket was a cool intro too. Simple episode but very memorable.
