Synopsis
A card game about classical poetry has no business making your palms sweat, but here we are. Chihaya Ayase is a girl who spent her childhood cheering for her sister's modeling career until a quiet, ostracized classmate named Arata Wataya introduced her to competitive karuta, a sport where players memorize 100 classical poems and race to snatch cards off the floor in fractions of a second. It requires the reflexes of an athlete, the memory of a scholar, and the heart of someone who refuses to quit. Chihaya falls hard for the game, and years later in high school, she's determined to build a karuta club from scratch and chase the dream of becoming Japan's best player, all while navigating her complicated feelings toward both Arata and her other childhood friend, Taichi Mashima. The 25-episode first season, animated by Madhouse, nails that rare balance where every match feels genuinely tense even though you're watching people grab cards. The character writing is what elevates it though: Chihaya, Taichi, and Arata all grow in ways that feel earned rather than formulaic, and the love triangle threads through everything without ever hijacking the story. If you liked how March Comes in Like a Lion handled a niche game with real emotional weight, or how Hikaru no Go made you care about something you'd never heard of, Chihayafuru does the same thing. It's a josei sports drama that treats its characters like adults even when they're teenagers, and it respects your intelligence the whole way through.

chihaya is honestly so pretty sometimes that it genuinely pisses me off. kana's words about turning things into poetry sounding like birds chirping was just so beautiful. this is definitely a show where i like the side characters way more than the main ones, except for taichi duh obv
shinobu is becoming my absolute favorite character in the entire series so far. even with the sudden changes she is still just so incredibly cute to watch on screen. i love how she carries herself despite all
cute ep but id say a boit boring
it is honestly so hard for me to keep watching sometimes because the characters in this show just piss me off so bad. chihaya is such an airhead and i could never be friends with her in real life. and i literally hate yumin too. taichi is the only perfect one here.
i am so sorry but i just honestly hate kids so much. watching her cry actually had me laughing tbh. the absolute best part of the episode was definitely watching taichi and arata send text messages to each other tho you can totally smell the bromance between them.
im honestly so happy to finally see arata back again. the emotional reunion between everyone just hit so incredibly hard. i am kind of nervous about all of this turning into a massive romance drama though because i really just like the focus on their friendships lowkey.
the duo of taichi and porky has honestly always been so funny to me. seeing them grow together while constantly playing against each other is just so sweet and incredibly cute. and that random conversation they had about chihaya right in the middle of it had me laughing tbh.
it honestly hurt me a lil bit watching porky and taichi compete against each other for that promotion. like why cant they literally both just go up to level a together. after all these episodes i still do not understand the rules of karuta at all but i am still enjoying it tbh.
i just love absolutely everything about taichi so much. watching both taichi and chihaya constantly thinking about arata the entire time is honestly making me think this might actually be love between them. the character dynamics in this group are just so fun to watch lowkey.
porkys shirt in this episode was actually so cute. the absolute highlight was definitely when chihaya was asked which member she would date and she answered kana chan. the fact that literally everyone except taichi said the exact same thing is just so funny and cute tbh.
she honestly reminds me so much of hinata shoyo from haikyuu lowkey. taichi is just being so cute again and seeing their friendships develop like this almost made me cry. it is just so nice watching all of them care about each other so deeply during these tough matches.
taichi is just looking so cute as usual. i honestly love the new girl so much already. showing up to a massive national competition wearing such a lame shirt is so funny. i thought it was some kind of special ritual but it turns out they are both just massive weirdos tbh.
i honestly just realized right now that this is basically a sports anime lowkey. finding out about the grandpa suffering from dementia made me so incredibly sad though. it is just really hard watching characters deal with that kind of heavy family stuff in the background.
it makes me so incredibly sad how her parents do not even look at her or listen to her. she loves her sister so much and i just hope she does not shut herself out from her family completely. seeing the dad actually did that for her at the end was so cute tbh.
im honestly so sorry if literally every single review i do starts with me saying that taichi is cute but he is just actually so cute. also seeing porky get on a roll is always fun to watch. i just love seeing the boys shine so much in these matches tbh. funny ep loved it
the visual direction concludes the season with excellent cinematic bookending by mirroring the first and final scenes. furthermore establishing ms miyauchi as a legitimate institutional shield who secures their budget grounds the club activities in realistic academic politics.
subverting the traditional expectations of an imposing reigning champion is a clever writing tactic. giving a highly intimidating competitor a very mundane flaw humanizes her character and provides a sharp comedic contrast to the otherwise severe tension of the tournament.
the build up twards the end of the season is starting and iot's getting intense
the production team struggles with narrative restraint during these high stakes sequences. relying far too heavily on extensive internal monologues to artificially build up the emotional weight significantly damages the kinetic momentum of the physical athletic competition.
matching a high school competitor against a grade schooler introduces a unique psychological barrier. the severe pressure of avoiding the sheer humiliation of losing to a child often forces older players into making irrational tactical errors during critical moments of the match.
