shinobu is becoming my absolute favorite character in the entire series so far. even with the sudden changes she is still just so incredibly cute to watch on screen. i love how she carries herself despite all

subverting the traditional expectations of an imposing reigning champion is a clever writing tactic. giving a highly intimidating competitor a very mundane flaw humanizes her character and provides a sharp comedic contrast to the otherwise severe tension of the tournament.

the queen is so hilarious i love shinobu so much. You would expect the final boss to be super strict but she is just out here snacking constantly. That is so funny to me.

Omg, Taichi’s mom is actually scary, we get funny scene 😂 And Shinobu really caught me off guard lol. The Queen qualifier match is pretty interesting, and Chihaya’s group seems to learn a lot from it. Shinobu’s backstory also gives some insight into her character now.

The characters were still intact and had strong interpersonal skills. It also shows the intensity of the karuta game between the veterans players.

In this episode, the Mizusawa Karuta Club is literally watching on the sidelines to see what kind of skill is needed for a Queen-level match. The part where they're blatantly fatshaming Shinobu irks me very much, but I guess they're framing it as a "handicap". Still, 10/10

We continued from previous episode and arrived at the peak of Karuta, seeing the Queen and Meijin matches, with Shinobu and Suo as the defending champions. We also get Shinobu's backstory, which explain why she feels a bit lonely episodes prior. And I enjoy the TaiChihaya moment!

EPISODE CONTEXT

Coming off Chihaya's painful defeat in the qualifiers, this episode serves as a necessary emotional decompression before the season finale. The shift from active competition to observation allows the Mizusawa team to internalize what top-tier karuta looks like, recalibrating their ambitions heading into the final episode. As episode 24 of 25, it functions as the reflective bridge between the season's competitive climax and whatever resolution the finale delivers.
