The contrast between childhood memories and the reality of growing apart feels so real. The way this show handles the heavy awkwardness of reuniting when things aren't the same is great.

This episode was a sorrowful moment for Ayase and Mashima when they actually knew the life now of Wataya. It was a heartwarming for the characters but still a get together scene.

At first, I thought Arata grew up to be a sh*t head, but it turns out that his actions are warranted and valid. I realized how off-putting everything that happened in this episode was if it were Arata's POV. The bike-chasing scene is iconic; I found myself holding my tears 10/10

I really like how the anime made a tone shift in their color everytime the mood or scene change. We get to see a cooler palette used when seeing Arata's backstory, which made it feel more somber. I really enjoy Taichi here, His character is subtle but protects Chihaya when needed

The Fukui scenery looks so nice, really refreshing start! Chihaya and Taichi try to reconnect with Arata, but he still feels a bit closed off. There’s a small moment that kinda shifts things for him. Really hoping they can come back together through karuta!

chihaya acting like a 6th grader while in highschool reads inconsistent at this point, theres room for growth that the writing doesnt fully give her yet. interested to see if the show pushes her past it soon.

taichi PLEASE someone remind this man he has a girlfriend that poor girl is gonna get broken up with eventually and we all know it. fully pissed off and im not even sure who to blame anymore

EPISODE CONTEXT

Coming off Chihaya's early individual karuta achievements in episode 4, this installment pivots to address the emotional gap left by Arata's absence, grounding the series in the trio's fractured bond before the story can move forward. It functions as essential connective tissue, deepening Arata's backstory and motivations at exactly the right moment. The groundwork laid here directly enables the next major arc beat — the formation of the high school karuta club — by clarifying what's at stake emotionally for all three leads.
