Once the most feared assassin in Japan, Himura Kenshin now does laundry at a kendo dojo and says 'oro' when he's confused. That gap between who he was and who he's trying to be is basically the entire engine of this 94-episode TV series, and it works way better than it has any right to. Set in 1878 during the Meiji era, Kenshin wanders into Tokyo carrying a reverse-bladed sword — the edge faces inward, so he can fight without killing. He stumbles into Kamiya Kaoru, a young instructor whose dojo is being ruined by someone using her school's name to murder people. Kenshin helps her out, she offers him a place to stay, and from there you get a slowly growing found family of misfits: a streetfighter named Sanosuke, a kid with too much pride named Yahiko, and a doctor named Megumi who's running from her own past. The vibe shifts constantly between genuine comedy, solid sword fights, and quieter moments where Kenshin's guilt catches up to him. The historical setting isn't just window dressing either — real Meiji-era politics and figures weave through the story in ways that feel grounded. If you liked the tonal mix of Samurai Champloo or the moral weight of Blade of the Immortal, this covers similar ground with a warmer, more comedic touch. The soundtrack aged surprisingly well too. Fair warning: the last chunk of episodes is filler, but the core arcs earn your time.
