Episode Context

Coming directly after Kenshin's pivotal clash with Sōjirō that left his signature weapon shattered, episode 38 wisely pivots to develop Sanosuke independently, ensuring the ensemble is battle-ready for the escalating conflict against Shishio's forces. This episode plants critical seeds for Sanosuke's combat evolution, giving him tools and resolve that will pay off in the confrontations ahead. At roughly the 40% mark of the series, it's a strategic character investment episode nestled within the broader buildup toward the Shishio arc's climactic battles.
