Episode Context

Sitting roughly a third of the way through the series, this episode deepens the Kyoto arc's central conflict after Kenshin and Misao joined forces in Episode 34. It functions as crucial worldbuilding, showing Shishio's influence as a lived nightmare rather than a distant threat, which raises the urgency for every confrontation ahead. This ground-level view of oppression sets the emotional foundation for the larger-scale battles and moral reckonings that define the arc's back half.
