This episode of Rurouni Kenshin increases the tension in the Kyoto Arc. Kenshin tries to follow his pacifist vow while facing dangerous enemies, Saito’s strict rules challenge him, and the Shishio group becomes more threatening, making the episode exciting and intense.

Episode Context

Positioned directly after the conclusion of the Red Pirate storyline, episode 28 serves as the critical bridge into the Kyoto Arc, widely regarded as the series' defining saga. The standalone and lighter arcs of the first quarter are firmly in the rearview mirror, and this episode's somber, tension-building approach signals that Kenshin's Tokyo life is about to be upended by unfinished business from his past as Battousai.
