Episode Context

Landing at episode 26 of 94, this kicks off a filler pirate arc that diverges from the manga's storyline, following the separation of Kenshin and Kaoru at the hands of the Kairyu pirates in the previous episode. It serves as the middle chapter of this mini-arc, deepening the conflict aboard the pirate ship and setting up the resolution that follows in the next episode. Viewers focused strictly on canon material can skip this stretch without losing continuity.
