Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Oshimeter
Synopsis
In a distant future where humanity has split between the authoritarian Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance, locked in a war neither side seems able to finish, no one holds the moral high ground in Legend of the Galactic Heroes, a 1988 OVA. On the Empire's side, Reinhard von Lohengramm is clawing his way up the military ranks with his childhood friend by his side, driven by personal reasons as much as ambition. On the Alliance's side, Yang Wen-li would genuinely rather be a historian than a war hero, but he keeps winning battles anyway. The story follows both of them as their paths slowly converge. There's no cartoonish villain. There's no obvious side to root for. What you get instead is incredibly detailed political maneuvering, military strategy that actually makes sense, and a massive cast of characters who all feel like real people with real stakes. If you liked Code Geass or Gundam Wing but wanted less melodrama and more political weight, this scratches that itch. If you're into something like Aldnoah.Zero but craved more depth, this is basically the ceiling of that genre. It's slow-burn and dialogue-heavy, so it rewards patience. But if you want an anime that treats you like an adult and genuinely wrestles with how power works, this is where you start.
