Synopsis

In Japan, 2030, cyberbrains, prosthetic bodies, and ghost hacking are just facts of life — and someone is using all of that against the government. Major Motoko Kusanagi leads Section 9, an elite counter-terrorism unit that was just reinstated after cracking the 'Laughing Man' case. Before they can settle back in, a group called the 'Individual Eleven' starts hitting targets across the country, and nobody can quite figure out who they are or what they actually want. On top of that, the government is quietly panicking over a massive refugee crisis spilling out from global conflicts abroad. Two slow-burning crises, one overstretched team. This is the kind of show that trusts you to keep up. It's not action-heavy in the way most mecha anime are — it's more of a political thriller that happens to have cyborgs in it. The cases are layered, the characters have real weight, and the questions it asks about identity, consciousness, and what it means to be human don't feel forced. They're just baked into the world. If you liked Psycho-Pass for its bleak near-future politics, or Ergo Proxy for its heavy philosophical atmosphere, this sits comfortably in that same space — arguably doing both better. It's a 26-episode TV series from Production I.G, and the second season is widely considered the stronger of the two. Mysterious, methodical, and genuinely rewarding if you give it your full attention.
