Synopsis

Reading minds, teleporting, seeing through walls — Saiki Kusuo can do basically anything you can think of with psychic powers. Sounds awesome, right? He hates it. All he wants is to be completely average and left alone, but that's hard when you accidentally know every embarrassing thought your classmates have and can't eat food without turning it into something weird with your powers. This TV series follows Kusuo through 120 episodes of trying — and failing — to live a quiet life at P.K. Academy, where the universe keeps throwing the most aggressively eccentric people at him. There's Nendou, whose mind is so empty even telepathy can't read it. There's Kaidou, a kid who genuinely believes he's fighting a secret evil organization. And there's Teruhashi, who thinks every person on earth should fall for her on sight. The comedy hits in rapid-fire short segments, so it never drags. Each bit is basically Kusuo dealing with some new absurd situation caused by his powers or his classmates, delivered deadpan while everyone around him loses their minds. If you liked the fourth-wall-breaking humor and ensemble chaos of Gintama, or the chuunibyou delusions in Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai, this sits right in that space. It also shares that low-energy protagonist energy with Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge, except Kusuo's laziness is backed by god-tier abilities he never asked for. Really easy to pick up and just let run.

"The Disastrous Life of Saiki K." is a vibrant, chaotic, and mindless collection of "Gag of the Day"-styled shorts that served as a major wake-up call for me. Watching this made me realize I need to consume a bigger variety of anime genres, if only to fully appreciate the parodies and references squeezed into every frame. It is an ace in trope subversion that rewards you for being a fan of the medium while remaining perfectly accessible to a casual viewer. While I’d typically label this as "slice of life", I'm sure there is a more accurate genre it falls under. Early on, I was quick to draw parallels to Mob Psycho 100 due to the psychic protagonist, but the tones are worlds apart. Where Mob is a journey of emotional growth, Saiki is a comedic endurance test. My best friend has been obsessed with this series since its release, and having her as a companion for this watch-through was a highlight. She acted as a guide through any references I didn't catch. It’s the perfect "breather" series: low on heavy lore but high on consistent laughs. Despite the straightforward premise, I definitely overthink everything I took in from it. Just as I grew up on western cartoons that had similar episode plotlines and lessons to be learned, this felt like such a funny way to start seeing what plotlines are common repeats in the anime world. And it's easy to reference back to it as I expand the type of anime I watch. I find myself pointing and being like "I know that trope now!!" or spotting other tropes that I didn't realize weren't just a one-off thing in the smallish selection of anime/manga that I've consumed so far. The heart of the show, however, is the fact that Saiki is such a fake IDGAF-er. He’s a classic loner-type who constantly dismisses his "annoying" classmates, yet time and time again, he is showing that he cares for these people. This dynamic makes it a fun choice for group watches. After my introduction to the series, I rewatched it with my entire friend group, and we loved assigning characters to one another based on our personalities. And yes, we did do group icons on Discord, and every time I enter call, I have a sound that plays "JUDGEMENT KNIGHTS OF..." While I don't see myself becoming hyper-active in the fandom or writing deep-dive fanfiction, I did find it intriguing to hear people debate whether Saiki actually sounds like he does in his commentaries or if he sounds closer to how other characters perceive him. The idea that he's not as nonchalant as he thinks is funny to me, but I'm told not to think too much about it until the next season. My only grievance is the accessibility of the dub for later seasons. This is such a "side-quest" anime, something I want to throw on while doing other tasks, and I'm such a dub person in general.
