Episode Context

As the very first episode of a massive 276-episode run, this is pure foundation, every major theme of the series, from perseverance to the power of friendship, is seeded here through Ash and Pikachu's rocky introduction. Nothing precedes it; everything follows from it. The groundwork laid here feeds directly into 'Pokémon Emergency!', where Ash's fledgling journey hits its first real test and the supporting cast begins to expand.
