Ash finally beating Gary felt like an ending in of itself. I love how he thinks outside the box in his battles, managing to beat a Blastoise with his Charizard. W episode!

Episode Context

Directly following 'The Ties That Bind', which reignited the Ash-Gary rivalry and set the bracket for their Silver Conference clash, this episode serves as the climactic payoff to one of the original series' longest-running character dynamics. Sitting at episode 272 of 276, it's deep in the endgame of the Johto arc, with only a handful of episodes remaining. The outcome here feeds directly into 'Playing with Fire!', determining Ash's path forward in the tournament's final rounds.
