Synopsis
Meet Ataru Moroboshi, a lecherous high school student with the worst luck imaginable, and that luck hits a new low when he's randomly chosen to save Earth from an alien invasion: by playing tag. His opponent is Lum, the gorgeous, tiger-striped bikini-wearing daughter of the Oni alien leader. All he has to do is grab her horns in ten days. The catch: she can fly and shoot lightning. The bigger catch: after he somehow wins, Lum misinterprets his victory shout as a marriage proposal and moves into his house. Now Ataru is stuck with an alien girl who genuinely loves him, an entire town full of weirdos, and a revolving door of extraterrestrial chaos, all while he keeps trying to flirt with every other girl in sight. The dynamic between Ataru's shameless wandering eye and Lum's electrifying jealousy is the engine that drives everything, and it never stops being funny. This 2022 TV series is David Production's fresh take on Rumiko Takahashi's legendary manga, and the modernized animation is genuinely gorgeous while staying true to the original's energy. If you grew up on the 1981 version, this is a loving update worth revisiting. If you're a fan of Ranma ½ or Tenchi Muyo, you'll recognize the DNA here: chaotic harem comedy with actual heart underneath the slapstick. It's 23 episodes of comedic, romantic sci-fi nonsense set in a world where the absurd is just Tuesday.

The Tomo-1 Queen Contest is a perfect season finale! All the girls in a battle royale (that turns out to be an ad for local shops) is hilarious. Ran kissing everyone to manipulate their strength is peak sabotage. Watch this to see DP flex their animation budget one last time for the season!
Ten needs his credit card revoked lol. Him buying random magical items from space infomercials always leads to disaster, and the shrink jar is no exception. It’s a slightly mid episode compared to the big character intros, but still packed with solid laughs.
The space teacher segment is classic sci-fi nonsense, but the voodoo doll half is where it really shines! Ataru dealing with a creepy doll that looks just like him is a great mix of spooky and hilarious. David Pro really nailed the goofy facial expressions here hahaha
Delinquent flashback! Seeing Lum, Benten, and Oyuki as middle-school punks is awesome. The new trio (Ginger, Sugar, Pepper) trying to steal Benten's chain is a great setup, but the punchline that it's just her house key is pure comedy lol.
Total chaos! Mendo getting swarmed by his family's prized octopuses is terrifying but hilarious. The real highlight is finding out that pickled plums make Oni drunk! Drunk Lum is a complete menace and the color-swap aesthetic is gorgeous. A huge W for gag-comedy fans, definitely watch!
Spicy Lum is the best Lum! The 80s pop montage of her brewing the magic lipstick is an absolute visual treat. The yaminabe (hot pot) segment where Lum gets offended by Earth's weak spices and nukes everyone with heat is hilarious. Awesome vibrant colors and food-based chaos in this episode!
This episode is bramazing! Ryunosuke teaming up with Shinobu to fake-date so she can afford a bra is peak Takahashi writing hahaha. The delinquents being totally cool with it is so funny. The second half with the Wishing Star is pure chaos. A must-watch for Ryunosuke fans!
Ryunosuke is here and she’s the best tomboy! Her violent dynamic with her insane father who fights the ocean is just top-tier comedy. Watching Ataru and Mendo lose their minds when they realize she’s a girl is a massive W. Definitely watch this to see the school's social hierarchy completely shattered!
We finally get some solid backstory on Lum and Ran! Seeing how Lum accidentally ruined Ran’s life back on their home planet explains so much lol. It’s a great character-focused episode that still maintains that gorgeous neon pop-art style. This is the episode you need if you want to understand why Ran is so crazy!
Enter Tobimaro! The baseball rivalry between him and Mendo is hilarious because Ton is practically indestructible. The way Ryoko blatantly cheats to help Ton win is so unhinged. Absolute cinema to see Ataru and the gang completely ruin a serious sports showdown. Pure slapstick perfection!
A classic student vs teacher war! The teachers banning snacks and patrolling in a giant cat costume is pure 80s sitcom gold. The second half with the infomercial crystal ball causing romantic misunderstandings is a total W. This has got some of the best high-energy chase sequences so far!
Ten-chan has arrived! Lum’s little cousin is a floating flamethrower and an absolute brat. His crush on Sakura leads to a wildly inappropriate movie theater date that is non-stop laughs. David Production’s new OP and ED visuals this episode are gorgeous. The new cast dynamics makes it a unique episode.
Mendo's little sister Ryoko is an absolute menace! The life-sized board game at the Mendo estate is peak anime nonsense. The trap doors and mochi-eating contests are animated so fluidly. They really dialed up the rich-kid tropes to an insane degree, might not be your cup of tea if you hate game shows.
Parent's Day! Seeing everyone's mothers is comedy gold, especially Mendo's mom pulling up in an ox carriage lol. Lum's mom speaking alien gibberish is hilarious. The second half actually shows Ataru missing Lum, proving this isn't totally devoid of romance. An absolute watch!
The sheer absurdity of Rei! His monster form is classic Takahashi design, beautifully updated with modern animation. The desperation of Ataru trying to study while aliens destroy his room is hilarious. A solid episode if you love chaotic physical comedy.
Peak yandere energy! Ran is introduced and she is completely unhinged. The way the studio transitions her from a sweet girl to a raging lunatic is pure cinema hahaha. The fake Ataru clone plot is great 80s nonsense. Watch this to see Lum's childhood friend stir up massive trouble.
Double feature! We get a pool and a beach episode in one go. The introduction of Sakura’s fiance Tsubame is a major W. It's funny seeing everyone spy on their date. Must watch purely for the gorgeous swimsuit designs and vibrant summer aesthetic David Production cooked up!
The Setsubun and Neptune segment is hilarious! Oyuki the Yuki-onna is finally introduced and the snow shoveling gag had me crying lol. The neon colors look stunning on the ice planet. Definitely a watch for the pure slapstick chaos and seeing Ataru try to "retire" from being the MC.
Great boxing glove segment, it is classic Takahashi slapstick at its finest. It's amazing how the studio makes characters just beating each other up look so gorgeous. The second half introduces more wacky aliens. It’s a total W for fans of random, gag-heavy comedy!
The introduction of Princess Kurama and her clan's weird kissing rules is exactly the kind of unhinged 80s humor I'm here for. The animation shines during the alien ship scenes, keeping that vibrant pop-art style looking fresh. It’s episodic nonsense in the best way possible lol.
