The arrival of Mendo turns the love triangle into an absolute mess, and it’s pure cinema. The maze segment in the second half is visually stunning with those neon colors. The gag-heavy format works so perfectly here.

Mendo Shutaro is such a strait-laced guy for a stupid gag-filled anime like this (or at least, that’s his first impression 😂) But with his addition to the cast, we’ve gotten more character interactions and potential pair-ups!! The contrast of personalities is too crazy good lol.

The voice lines in this episode and the way they are executed in this episode are excellent. I personally found the guy named Mendo, if there was a problem was pretty funny. "I wish I was a piece of lint so I can stay on you forever" was pretty wild work; I'm actually enjoying this wild ride so far.

Episode Context

After Episodes 1-2 established Ataru and Lum's contentious dynamic and the fallout on Ataru's relationship with Shinobu, Episode 3 expands the core cast with Shuutarou Mendou, a pivotal addition who becomes a recurring rival and romantic complication for the rest of the season. This is still early in the 23-episode run, firmly in the character introduction phase, and Mendou's arrival sets the foundation for escalating love triangle (and polygon) comedy that will fuel much of the season's conflict ahead.
