Synopsis
Standing well below average height for an aspiring volleyball star, Shouyou Hinata is short. Like, really short for someone who wants to be a volleyball star. But after watching a player called the 'Little Giant' dominate the court despite a similar height, he's convinced raw determination can close the gap. There's just one problem — his middle school team gets absolutely demolished in their first real tournament by Tobio Kageyama, a prodigy setter with a reputation for being impossible to work with. Fast forward to high school, and Hinata enrolls at Karasuno, the Little Giant's old school, ready to start fresh. Guess who's also on the team. The entire foundation of this 25-episode TV series is two guys who can't stand each other figuring out how to become something neither could be alone, while dragging a fallen powerhouse team back into relevance. Production I.G nails the volleyball sequences — rallies feel genuinely tense, and the animation gives weight to every spike and receive without going full superhero mode. The character work extends beyond Hinata and Kageyama too; the whole roster gets moments that land. The soundtrack quietly does a lot of heavy lifting during matches, building tension without being obnoxious about it. If you liked the team dynamics in Kuroko's Basketball or the underdog energy of Slam Dunk, this hits a similar nerve but with a more grounded sport. Fans of Yowamushi Pedal's earnest tone will feel right at home. It's the kind of show where you end up caring about volleyball way more than you ever expected to.
