Iron Wok Jan
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Jan Akiyama, a sixteen-year-old cooking prodigy, walks into one of Tokyo's most prestigious Chinese restaurants not to learn, not to impress — but to dominate. His whole deal is that cooking isn't about making people happy or serving from the heart. It's competition. It's war. And he's here to wage it against Kiriko Gobanchō, the owner's granddaughter, who believes the exact opposite — that food is an act of care. Their philosophies clash hard, and neither one is backing down. What makes this interesting is that Jan isn't your typical shounen protagonist with a golden heart hiding underneath the bravado. He genuinely thinks cooking exists to prove superiority, and the show leans into that friction instead of resolving it cheaply. The culinary battles themselves are animated by TROYCA with real energy — wok flames, knife work, plating sequences — all treated like fight choreography. And the focus on Chinese cuisine specifically gives it a distinct identity, with actual techniques and dishes you don't usually see in anime. If you liked the cooking battles in Shokugeki no Soma but wanted a protagonist who's more abrasive and less crowd-pleasing, this hits that spot. There's also a Yakitate!! Japan kind of absurdity baked into the comedy, where reactions to food get wildly over the top. The tone stays comedic and action-packed without dragging into melodrama. It's a solid pick if competitive cooking anime is your thing.
