FROM OLD COUNTRY BUMPKIN TO MASTER SWORDSMAN SEASON 2 HAS NO VOTE THIS WEEK
Synopsis
A legendary sword master long since retired, Beryl Gardinant just wants to live quietly in his rural village, tend to his garden, and not be legendary anymore. Problem is, the world doesn't care what he wants. Season 2 of From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman picks up where things left off: Beryl's past is still knocking on his door, and this time it's bringing bigger problems. His former students, including royal knight captain Alyucia and the mage Srena, are tangled up in whatever's coming, and the old man can't exactly sit this one out. The setup lands somewhere between a cozy slice-of-life and full-blown fantasy action, with Beryl reluctantly dusting off skills that made him a legend in the first place. Studios Passione and Hayabusa Film are handling production, and the first season already showed they know how to animate fluid swordplay: the combat choreography has real weight to it. There's a nice balance of humor and genuine stakes, with a power system rooted in personal history rather than generic level-ups. If you liked the "retired overpowered guy" angle from Banished from the Hero's Party, or the older protagonist energy of The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, this hits a similar spot but leans harder into the action side. Chronicles of an Aristocrat Reborn in Another World fans might dig the fantasy world-building too. It's a comfortable watch that doesn't skip on the fights.

Beryl splashing that wine on the smug noble lady while playing the clumsy bumpkin was the best part of the episode. He didn't even hesitate to embarrass himself so Shueste could keep her dignity. That's a real one. The ambush after that though felt like it came from a completely different show
I couldn't look away when Henblitz was holding Vesper's body. That fog spell came out of nowhere and the whole tone just snapped from lighthearted romance to straight up war. Beryl parrying that giant green guy was clean but six dead guards is a heavy price. This show knows how to twist the knife
I'm so tired of jealous Allucia. Every episode it's the same blush and stammer routine while she watches another woman take a shot at Beryl. Girl please just make a move already or sit down. The Shueste stuff was way more interesting than another round of that gag
Allucia standing in that Scarlet dress and Beryl barely registers it until the party's basically over. Warren's right about him never getting married on his own. The man needs a nudge and honestly the whole harem lineup just keeps growing and I'm here for it
Shueste telling Beryl she'll raise his children and cook his meals without flinching was actually kind of endearing. Then he hit her with the 'your brother and dad just want you happy' line and you could see the real feelings break through the noble duty talk. That balcony scene got me
That ring scene had me screaming at the screen. You don't show a proposal ring to your buddies right before a carriage ride home and live to tell about it. Then six guards dead and Henblitz crying over Vesper. The show went from wedding bells to funeral bells real quick
I loved the scene where Mewi and Ficelle got caught sneaking into the kitchen and ended up having to scrub the floors together as punishment. They are becoming such good friends.
Warren turning out to be Count Froomvelk was a fun reveal and his sister proposing three days in the same room caught everyone off guard including Allucia
Shueste dropping that line about staying in the same room for three days had me dying laughing and Allucia losing her mind in the background made it even better
Shueste proposing three days in the same room caught me completely off guard and Allucia looking like she was about to explode made the entire scene gold
I love how Beryl immediately goes into mentor mode the second Vesper opens up about wanting to protect Frau. It is such a cozy episode and seeing Mewi and Ficelle get caught making late night sandwiches was adorable
The fight choreo using leg sweeps and pommel strikes instead of giant magic beams was so cool to watch. Real martial arts hit way harder
I could literally feel the weight behind those wooden sword strikes in the dark dojo. That heavy crunching sound effect every time they parried was wild
Allucia sulking and pounding drinks at the capital tavern while Beryl was back home grilling meat was hilarious, she was so jealous she got left behind
Watching Beryl break down in tears on the porch after Mordeau put his hand on his head got me so good. I was expecting a hype sword match, but the actual impact was emotional when Mordeau confessed he retired years ago because Beryl was already better than him. The heavy wooden sword sound effects made every clash feel so real too
Mordeau admitting he passed down the dojo because Beryl was already stronger at twenty blew my mind. I love that his old man was never actually better all this time
