Synopsis
Frail and overprotected, Ichitaro — the young heir of a wealthy merchant family in Edo-period Japan — is basically trapped indoors for his own good. The twist is that his caretakers aren't just human — he's watched over by yokai, including a Hakutaku named Nikichi and an Inugami named Sasuke, spirits who are genuinely devoted to keeping him safe. One night he sneaks out, because of course he does, and witnesses a murder. From there, a string of bizarre killings starts rippling through Edo, and Ichitaro — fragile as he is — decides he's going to figure out who's behind it all, with his supernatural companions doing the heavy lifting when things get dangerous. The dynamic between Ichitaro and his spirit guardians is where the show really finds its warmth. There's a gentleness to how they interact that reminds me of Natsume's Book of Friends, but the mystery layer and historical setting give it a different texture, closer to something like Mononoke in its folklore-drenched atmosphere. If you've been craving that Mushishi feeling of quiet supernatural storytelling but want an actual plot driving things forward, this 13-episode TV series from Bandai Namco Pictures hits that sweet spot. It's based on a novel series, so the mystery writing has some real structure to it — not just vibes. The Edo setting is gorgeous, the tone balances emotional weight with genuine suspense, and the folklore elements feel earned rather than decorative.
