Synopsis

Disguised as a man, Chizuru Yukimura heads to Kyoto to find her missing father, and on her first night there, she witnesses white-haired berserkers slaughtering people in the streets. Before she can process any of that, the Shinsengumi show up, and suddenly she's wrapped up in the inner workings of one of Japan's most famous samurai groups. The catch: they have secrets of their own, and they're not exactly thrilled about a civilian knowing what she's seen. This is a 12-episode TV series set during the Bakumatsu period, and it does a solid job grounding you in that world: the political tension, the factional warfare, the sense that an entire era is ending. But layered on top of the historical drama are genuine supernatural elements: demons, a mysterious elixir called the Water of Life, and questions about what Chizuru's father was really researching. Characters like the sharp-edged Hijikata, the deceptively cheerful Okita, and the quiet Saito all get room to breathe beyond their archetypes, and the show treats their loyalty and internal conflicts with real weight. The vibe sits somewhere between the political intrigue of Intrigue in the Bakumatsu – Irohanihoheto and the supernatural-meets-historical tension of something like Beyond the Boundary, but with a josei sensibility that keeps the emotional stakes personal. If you liked Hyakka Ryōran: Samurai Girls but wanted something more grounded and character-driven, this is worth your time.
