A slower episode than the first, it shows how much Chizuru is trying her best to fit in the Shinsengumi despite being forcibly conscripted into its service as she continues the search for her father.

In this second chapter, Chizuru tries to earn a place within the Shinsengumi and does her best to fit in. However, it won't be as easy as she imagines, as she must work hard to gain their acceptance while continuing her search for her father. The story moves at a good pace and is easy to follow, although I would love to see a few more samurai duels.

Its giving slow pacing, forced drama and exaggerated reactions make it so hard to sit through. It really drags down what could have been a much tighter experience.

Episode Context

Hakuouki shifts gears early with an episode that prioritizes tension within over threats without. The Shinsengumi's ranks simmer with unspoken friction as Chizuru navigates her precarious position among warriors who haven't decided if she's a guest or a liability. Hijikata's rigid command style collides with the personal demons haunting Sannan, and the cracks in the group's unity start showing before outside forces even apply pressure. The pacing is deliberately measured, this isn't an action showcase but a character-driven slow burn that rewards attention to dialogue and body language. Studio Deen leans into moody interiors and heavy silences to sell the emotional weight. Expect an episode built on atmosphere and interpersonal complexity rather than swordplay, laying crucial groundwork for the loyalties and fractures that will define the season.
