Great introductory episode for the Shinsengumi and the horrors their group face as protectors of society.

A very exciting chapter featuring samurai and intense sword fighting. The visuals are brilliant, perfectly capturing the atmosphere of old Tokyo. The characters are mysterious, and the story successfully captures the samurai aura that I love so much.

Great start. Solid narrative hook and clean. Polished visuals with zero graphical issues.

Episode Context

Hakuouki opens with a deliberate, atmosphere-heavy premiere that prioritizes world-building over action. The episode drops you into 1864 Kyoto through the eyes of Chizuru Yukimura, a young woman searching for her missing father, and the tension is immediate, dark streets, lurking danger, and an encounter with the infamous Shinsengumi. Studio Deen leans into moody visuals and a restrained pace, letting the historical setting breathe while threading supernatural undercurrents beneath the period drama surface. This is a setup episode through and through, introducing key players and establishing the power dynamics Chizuru finds herself caught between. Expect suspense over spectacle. The show signals early that identity, duty, and secrets will drive the narrative forward, and the blending of real history with otherworldly mystery gives the premiere a distinct edge worth investing in.
