The Shinsengumi tries to make a new alliance only to be met by betrayal, and the development regarding Chizuru's search of her father, as well as Sannan's research, gave the audience very unexpected surprises instead.

This episode was absolute agony to watch. Nothing hurts worse than turning off a show and just being genuinely mad at what the writers did

This chapter is shrouded in mystery, as certain members of the Shinsengumi harbor dark secrets, and all signs point toward the investigations conducted by Chizuru's father. It is a revealing chapter that explores what human beings are capable of doing to achieve their goals, regardless of the consequences.

Episode Context

Hakuouki shifts its lens inward at the season's midpoint, and the result is a slower-burn episode built on simmering political tension rather than blade-on-blade action. The Shinsengumi's unity comes under pressure from multiple angles: a new advisor whose presence divides the ranks, logistical ambitions that signal the corps' growing influence, and Sannan's quietly unsettling experiments with a mysterious substance. The tone is measured and suspenseful, leaning heavily into themes of trust, factional loyalty, and the friction between tradition and ambition. Character dynamics carry the weight here, expect sharp dialogue exchanges and uneasy alliances rather than full-scale combat. The episode rewards patience, layering in political maneuvering and interpersonal friction that clearly functions as groundwork for heavier conflicts ahead. A necessary chess-positioning installment that keeps the supernatural undercurrent alive through Sannan's research.
