Kill Blue Is Spring 2026's Most Slept-On Anime — And That's a Mistake

Kill Blue Is Spring 2026's Most Slept-On Anime — And That's a Mistake

Tadatoshi Fujimaki is back, and everyone's sleeping on it. Kill Blue brings a legendary assassin, a kid's body, and the best school life comedy this season.

Kill Blue aired its first episode on April 11, 2026, and its latest episode, Episode 6, on May 16, 2026. Although six episodes have already aired, I believe there are still a lot of people who haven't even heard of it yet. Since Kill Blue is a lesser-known title compared to the bigger hits of the Spring 2026 season, people tend to skip right past it rather than giving it a chance.

I can understand why people skip this series to focus on major names like Nippon Sangoku, Yomi no Tsugai (Daemons of the Shadow Realm), or even Re:Zero and One Piece. To be honest, Kill Blue can't quite compete with those massive Spring 2026 lineups. However, after watching every episode, I really think it's a unique and interesting anime that deserves a chance.

You may not have heard of Kill Blue before, but you're probably quite familiar with its author. Kill Blue was created by Tadatoshi Fujimaki, the mastermind behind the famous Shonen sports anime Kuroko's Basketball. Although Kill Blue features a completely different story, there are still elements that feel wonderfully familiar.

Kill Blue is a unique and interesting series that I truly believe everyone should give a try, so I wanted to introduce it in this post. Before diving any deeper, I understand everyone's concerns regarding spoilers. While Kill Blue is based on a manga, I want to ensure you get the best experience possible, so this post will contain zero manga spoilers. However, since we will be discussing some content from the anime episodes, if you want to avoid absolutely all spoilers, please stop reading and save this post for later!

The Main Character of Kill Blue: A 39-Year-Old Assassin and a 13-Year-Old Boy

Before we dive into the story, let’s talk about the main character of this series. Compared to other shows in the Spring 2026 season, Kill Blue has a pretty hilarious plot that centers around a 39-year-old assassin and a 13-year-old boy. You might wonder how these two relate to each other, but they are actually the exact same person, and the main character of Kill Blue.

The main character of Kill Blue is Ogami Juzo. At the beginning of the story, he is a 39-year-old elite hitman, but due to an unexpected incident, his world is turned upside down when he is transformed into a 13-year-old boy! Since I don't want to spoil too much in this post, I won't reveal exactly what happened, I want everyone to at least give Episode 1 a try. But believe me, it is absolutely hilarious and will likely leave you rushing to watch Episode 2.

It isn’t easy for a 39-year-old man to suddenly live as a young boy, and Ogami has to go through a lot of silly situations just to maintain a "normal" life. He has to redo everything from scratch, and I'm sure it feels like living an entirely different life for him. Ogami has to go to school, make new friends, and even take all kinds of exams all over again. While we as viewers find it hilarious, it must be a pretty tough time for Ogami!

After watching every episode of Kill Blue, I can safely say it isn't an intense show with a thrilling, high-stakes plot. Instead, it does a fantastic job of portraying Ogami's hilarious new lifestyle. To be honest, Kill Blue won't give you the same epic feeling as Demon Slayer, One Piece, or even Nippon Sangoku, but it will absolutely draw you into Ogami’s new daily life.

The Main Plot of Kill Blue: The Reason for a Second School Life

After introducing Ogami Juzo, let’s talk about the story. The plot of Kill Blue is actually quite simple: it basically follows Ogami as he returns to school for an investigation. Again, since I don't want to spoil too much in this post, I won't touch on the details of the investigation. Plus, since the reason is revealed very early on, it really won't take long at all for you to get into the story.

Kill Blue actually looks quite similar to Spy × Family in terms of the story, as both main characters enter specific schools for a mission. The pacing and story flow of the two series feel very similar as well. Since Ogami never really went to school before, now that he is thrust into this new school life, he faces a lot of silly and hilarious difficulties.

Kill Blue does a wonderful job of portraying Ogami’s second life. Although the plot is quite simple, Ogami has already gone through a lot in his new school life, defeating intruders, kidnappers, and even some love rivals! Since Ogami is a powerful assassin, even though this new life throws a number of difficulties his way, he overcomes everything with his incredible strength.

I really love the events of Ogami’s second life. If you're willing to give Kill Blue a try, I am pretty sure the battles with his love rivals will amaze you. Not only are those battles funny and hilarious, but they are also animated in high quality, making them truly amazing to watch. Especially the battle with Kohazame Shin, it is one of the best fights in Kill Blue, and I strongly recommend everyone check it out!

The Return of Tadatoshi Fujimaki: Kill Blue & Kuroko's Basketball

Although I believe a lot of people skipped Kill Blue or didn't even put it on their watchlist for the Spring 2026 season, it actually shares the same author as Kuroko's Basketball, Tadatoshi Fujimaki. Of course, Kill Blue and Kuroko's Basketball are two completely different titles, and they have no connection as of the current episodes. However, there are definitely scenes in Kill Blue that share that same familiar Kuroko's Basketball feeling.

Since Kuroko's Basketball is a massively famous title and this post is focused on Kill Blue, I won't go into too much detail about it. But for those who might not know, Kuroko's Basketball is basically about a group of high schoolers competing in intense basketball tournaments. The reason I am mentioning this is because it highlights just how experienced Fujimaki is at portraying school life and student dynamics.

Although Kill Blue and Kuroko's Basketball are two completely different anime, there are parts where Kill Blue definitely mirrors its predecessor. For a quick example, the character I mentioned earlier, Kohazame Shin, has a very eccentric personality and gets nervous easily. When he gets anxious, the only thing that can calm him down is "reverting to babyhood," which is why he is always sucking on a pacifier.

This is absolutely hilarious because Shin has a top-tier, good-looking face, but such a weird personality, leading to a ton of funny scenes. Seeing him immediately reminded me of a character from Kuroko's Basketball, Midorima Shintarou. Although Midorima is incredibly talented and handsome, his stubborn need to carry a "lucky item" around all the time also leads to a lot of comedy. Shin and Shintarou have no actual connection, but since they share the same author, the characters of Kill Blue really do remind me of Kuroko's Basketball.

An Honest Review of Kill Blue: Is This Title Right for You?

There is no such thing as a perfect anime. Every show has viewers it won't appeal to, while on the other hand, there will always be people who absolutely love lesser-known, second- or third-tier series. Kill Blue is a funny and hilarious anime, and while I would love to recommend it to everyone, it might not suit every viewer since the overall plot is quite simple.

While Ogami’s new life is portrayed beautifully, the plot itself becomes the biggest constraint on his adventure, since he can’t really do anything too "exciting" outside of adapting to middle school life. The Spring 2026 season is packed with thrilling anime, and compared to them, Kill Blue admittedly might not look very interesting on the surface.

If you are looking for a major, heavy-hitting anime to focus on for the Spring 2026 season, then this might not be the title for you. Ogami’s new life is genuinely funny and hilarious, but outside of that, there isn't much more to it. Kill Blue isn't a show where you can really dive deep or find complex topics to discuss, so if you are looking for a series to analyze, this isn't the one.

However, if you are just looking for a show that can make you laugh all day, or something lighthearted to fill your free time, then Kill Blue is definitely what you need. While the simple plot might seem like a weakness, it also means that anyone can enjoy this anime without overthinking it. Kill Blue doesn't have any scenes that will make you feel uneasy, making it the perfect choice if you are just looking for some pure fun.

Conclusion:

If you have already watched most of the major titles of the Spring 2026 season and are currently looking for something to fill your free time, Kill Blue is definitely a hidden gem you don't want to miss. It is incredibly funny and hilarious. Trust me, if you give this series a chance, it will give you a completely different experience, and you will find yourself completely hooked on Ogami’s new life!
