Nippon Sangoku Review: Better Visuals, Sharper Writing—Has the Kingdom Killer Arrived?

Move over Kingdom—Nippon Sangoku is here. With brilliant tactical warfare and superior 2026 visuals, see why fans call it the 'Kingdom Killer.' Read our full review of Aoteru’s journey.
Nippon Sangoku is a Spring 2026 anime that caught my attention easily just by its name. Compared to other titles, Nippon Sangoku has a notably short title, but the name itself gives us the biggest reason to watch: the Sangoku. While it might be hard to understand the meaning from the English name alone, "Sangoku" here refers to 三國—the famous historical era of the Three Kingdoms.
After understanding the meaning of "Sangoku," let’s look at "Nippon." Since Nippon refers to Japan, combining these words hints that Japan is experiencing its own Three Kingdoms era. Once you notice that hint, it’s hard not to be curious and excited; after all, who wouldn't want to know how and why Japan has ended up in a Three Kingdoms scenario?
Nippon Sangoku aired its first episode globally on April 5, 2026, on Amazon Prime Video. After watching it myself, I was absolutely stunned and loved it instantly. Although the story is brutal and quite violent—as expected from a story set during a time of war—the plot, animation, backgrounds, opening, and even the voice acting are all amazing. Every part of Nippon Sangoku is so well-done that it captured my heart right away.
A week later, Nippon Sangoku aired its second episode on April 12, 2026. This time, I watched it immediately and was once again stunned. Episode 2 was amazing; not only did it show us how violent this world can be, but it also began to dive into the main character Aoteru’s journey. Personally, I think Nippon Sangoku is an incredible anime that everyone should watch. I understand it might be challenging for foreign viewers because of the specific dialects and difficult terminology, so to help everyone start their Nippon Sangoku journey, I’ve decided to dive in and share my thoughts along with some helpful explanations.

One of the Best New Anime: Nippon Sangoku
Before we dive deeper into Nippon Sangoku, please note that this post is strictly manga-spoiler-free. Although the anime is an adaptation, I want to focus on my thoughts and reviews regarding the show itself, so you won’t find any spoilers from the manga here. However, since we will be discussing the plot in detail, there will be spoilers for the anime. If you haven’t watched it yet or want to avoid spoilers, please stop reading now!
First of all, let me share some background on Nippon Sangoku. Within just the first two episodes, we already get a glimpse of what has happened to Japan and what lies ahead in Aoteru Misumi’s (三角青輝) journey through this era of warfare. As the title suggests, Aoteru’s path isn't a fun treasure hunt or a search for delicious food; it is a journey defined by violence and war. If you are someone who dislikes these themes, this definitely isn't the anime for you—but if you are okay with them, Aoteru’s story will absolutely amaze you.
Since the opening episodes feature narration by the famous Megumi Han explaining the past, I want to focus this post on the current state of Japan rather than the history leading up to the war. While we as viewers enjoy the beautiful scenes, high-quality animation, and incredible voice acting, the reality for the characters in Nippon Sangoku is that this is likely the worst era they could live in.
Japan is no longer a safe haven. People are killed for no reason, forced to pay high taxes for absurd justifications, and the army has became out of control after obtaining "true" power. Even within just two episodes, we see the hardships people face, and the animation is so high-quality that we can practically feel their despair. Personally, I believe Nippon Sangoku is one of the best new anime out there, capable of competing with titles like Re:Zero, Dr. Stone, or even One Piece. It hasn't just given me an incredible viewing experience; it has shown me the cruel reality of a country ruled by military force and constant war.
Why You Should Watch: The Highlights of Nippon Sangoku
Personally, I believe Nippon Sangoku is a must-watch anime for the Spring 2026 season. For those who haven’t started it yet or are wondering if it’s worth your time, I have three key reasons why you should give Nippon Sangoku a chance.
The first reason is the high quality of the production. Although it might sound hard to believe, Nippon Sangoku has everything you could want from an anime. It features an amazing opening song called "Hidane" (火種), and the animation quality is top-tier—every scene looks stunning. The backgrounds and battle animations, especially in Episode 2, are excellent, and the story itself is engaging with several unexpected plot twists.
The second reason is the uncensored reality of the war era. Many people have likely heard of Kingdom; it is a title where the manga is incredibly famous and beloved, yet the anime never truly went viral. The reason is simple: the anime censored too many scenes, which ultimately left it lacking depth. Perhaps the production team behind Nippon Sangoku recognized why Kingdom struggled, because right now—even just two episodes in—we are seeing the raw violence necessary for a war era story. While constant violence isn't necessarily a "good" thing, it would feel strange if characters in a war-torn world acted normally. After all, if you lived in that era, how could you not go a little crazy?
The third reason is the wonderful performance of the voice actors. The production team of Nippon Sangoku clearly went all-in, giving us not only high-quality animation but also a top-tier voice cast. As I mentioned before, the narration is provided by Megumi Han (the voice of Gon Freecss in Hunter X Hunter and Kana Arima in Oshi no Ko), while the main character, Aoteru Misumi, is voiced by Kensho Ono (the voice of Tetsuya Kuroko in Kuroko’s Basketball and Giorno Giovanna in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind). On top of that, the "strongest" voice actor, Yuichi Nakamura, also has a role in Nippon Sangoku—though I won’t reveal which character he plays here, as I want you to watch and figure it out for yourself!
Why Nippon Sangoku is the Next Great Warfare Anime: A Comparison with Kingdom
When it comes to warfare-related anime and manga, the title most people consider the gold standard is likely the Kingdom series. With its anime still ongoing, the manga currently selling hot, and a fifth live-action movie adaptation arriving in Summer 2026, it is quite obvious that Kingdom is currently the most famous warfare epic in the world. Before watching Nippon Sangoku, I would have agreed with that statement—but after seeing just two episodes, my opinion has started to change.
It is quite futile to compare Nippon Sangoku and Kingdom based on sales, as it is unfair to compare a twenty year old series with a brand-new one; we all know which title would win that battle. Instead of focusing on sales, I want to compare them from other perspectives. The first is the story. Unquestionably, Kingdom’s story is great—I personally love it—but no matter how good the plot is, everyone knows where it is heading. This isn't because the author is bad at storytelling, but because the journey of how Ei Sei (also known as Ying Zheng) becomes the ultimate victor is already written in history books. We know what happens next, but with Nippon Sangoku, the future is a complete mystery.
While Ei Sei will eventually complete the unification of China, I suspect Nippon Sangoku will also lead toward the unification of Japan as its ending—but who truly knows? Since Nippon Sangoku is not based on historical facts, it is difficult to guess how things will wrap up, whereas with Kingdom, we already know the destination. Between a story with a predetermined ending and a completely original one that keeps us guessing, I personally pick the latter; it feels more engaging when I can actually speculate on what might happen next. Besides the story, I think the atmosphere of these two series is also vastly different.
Both Nippon Sangoku and Kingdom (referring to the manga) are great, but Nippon Sangoku offers a much more realistic atmosphere. If you compare the two, you’ll notice the difference quickly: Nippon Sangoku is set in the future and feels quite relevant to our own era, whereas Kingdom is set in a distant past that is harder to fully grasp. Kingdom’s story and character development are incredible, but it features elements that don't always feel historically accurate—such as a bandit suddenly becoming a great general. While the author, Yasuhisa Hara, blends these irregularities into the story perfectly so that we don’t question them, they can still feel a bit odd upon reflection.
Nippon Sangoku is different. Because it takes place in the future, the buildings and weapons are somewhat familiar to us, which makes the world more believable than the one in Kingdom. Of course, Kingdom is a fantastic series that I love, but we can’t deny that it is difficult to truly immerse ourselves in a world from 2,000 years ago. It is much easier for us to step into an imagined future that still shares roots with our present day.

What Happens Next: The Journey of Aoteru Misumi
In the most recent part of Nippon Sangoku, we saw the main character, Aoteru Misumi, reach the Touryumon, ready to take his exam. Since I haven't read the manga and am focusing strictly on the anime, I don’t know exactly what comes next. While there is always a slim possibility of a character being killed off early in a series this brutal, I expect that Aoteru will pass the exam and finally begin his long journey toward the unification of Japan.
For those who aren't very familiar with Chinese history or the "Three Kingdoms" era, there is one detail I want to share that gives us a glimpse of how Aoteru might begin his unification journey. When speaking of the Three Kingdoms, there is one person everyone should know: Zhuge Liang, also known as Kongming. He is a legendary figure because he was one of the era's most brilliant strategists, and he is famous for holding the same item Aoteru holds in the opening "Hidane" (火種)—the feather fan.
I don’t think the author or the production team included the feather fan just for fun or without reason; I believe it’s a deliberate hint. Of course, a fan alone might not be enough to convince everyone, but we also have to look at Aoteru’s specific strengths. In any war era, those with high physical ability and combat prowess usually find the most success, but Aoteru doesn't seem to fit that mold. Even within the first two episodes, we see that Aoteru had read a lot, possesses vast knowledge of Japanese history, and is intimately familiar with topography. All of these traits suggest that Aoteru is being positioned as a brilliant strategist, much like Zhuge Liang himself.
Again, I don’t think the author designed Aoteru with these specific characteristics without a purpose; there are clearly reasons why he is being positioned as a brilliant strategist in a "Three Kingdoms" setting. In any era of war, a great strategist is a treasure for any general, so we can expect Aoteru to have his own "rank up" journey from here on out, similar to Shin’s growth in Kingdom. However, this raises a familiar question: does the title itself suggest the ending? While we know the historical facts regarding Qin Shi Huang, we don't know exactly where the Kingdom series will conclude—and the same applies to Nippon Sangoku. Historically, the Three Kingdoms era did not end well, and Zhuge Liang never actually fulfilled his dream. If the word "Sangoku" is a hint about the finale, does it mean Aoteru is destined for the same tragic end as Zhuge Liang?

Conclusion:
Nippon Sangoku is truly a fantastic anime. Since it has only just aired its second episode, now is the perfect time to start your journey alongside the series while it's still easy to catch up. Nippon Sangoku offers a realistic depiction of warfare paired with the high-quality animation that the Kingdom anime unfortunately failed to deliver in its early stages. Comparing the anime adaptations alone—as I mentioned, comparing the manga sales would be unfair—Nippon Sangoku has already surpassed what Kingdom offered in its first two seasons!
The Kingdom anime struggled for its first two seasons; Season 1 was widely criticized, and while Season 2 received some positive reviews, it didn't do much to change the overall reputation. While Kingdom eventually shined during Season 3 with the Coalition Invasion Arc, it hasn't quite hit that peak again since. Nippon Sangoku is completely different—even with only two episodes out, it has already gone viral and become a major talking point. It really is a great series and, once again, is definitely worth your time!
