Unquestionably, the One Piece Elbaph Arc, Re:Zero Season 4, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4, and Dr. Stone: Science Future Part 3 are amazing anime. But how about some new series where you don’t need to do any "homework" and can just dive right in? From Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, Daemons of the Shadow Realm is currently blowing up online.
Compared to those highly anticipated returning hits, non-sequel anime might have less initial hype. However, as Fate/strange Fake proved last season, non-sequels are often incredible—they build massive global fanbases, constantly go viral, and are definitely worth watching and investing your time in.
After watching every non-sequel anime of Spring 2026, I’ve found three titles that are truly standouts. These series are amazing, currently building massive global fanbases and, more importantly, almost every episode delivers an amazing plot twist with an unexpected story. I know what everyone is worried about, so let me reassure you: since I want to encourage you to watch these, there will be no spoilers in this post. Instead, I’ll focus on my honest thoughts and share who these titles are perfect for, and who might want to skip them.

The First Best New Anime of Spring 2026: Witch Hat Atelier
Witch Hat Atelier (とんがり帽子のアトリエ) had aired its first episode, titled "The Magic That Started Everything," on April 6, 2026. While Episode 2 is technically scheduled for release on April 13, 2026, you might notice it is already available online. This is because several streaming platforms released the first two episodes together as a special premiere.
To be honest, I wasn't really into it at first. I’ve watched so many magic-related anime— Black Clover, the Fairy Tail series, Mashle: Magic and Muscles, and more—that I thought I’d seen it all. But after giving it a try, I was blown away. If you search for Witch Hat Atelier on X or any other platform, I believe you’ll be amazed too; the animation is just so beautiful.
It may sound hard to believe, but every scene in Witch Hat Atelier is incredibly well done and beautiful; watching it feels just like watching an anime movie. Beyond the stunning visuals, the story is equally amazing. Even within the first episode, it delivers an unexpected plot twist and sets up great character development for the protagonist, Coco.
Following that twist, Coco embarks on a new journey where many trials await her. Witch Hat Atelier is a fantastic anime that has everything you could want, but even though it seems perfect, it might be a "skip" for some people. It is quite similar to Frieren: Beyond Journey's End —while everything about it is high quality, it is a slow-paced series. If you liked Frieren, then Witch Hat Atelier is a must-watch for you. However, if you didn't really enjoy Frieren, you might want to skip this for now, as the story is just beginning and progresses at a steady, slow pace.

The Second Best New Anime of Spring 2026: Nippon Sangoku
After the first title, I’m excited to share the second-best new anime of Spring 2026: Nippon Sangoku (日本三国). Since this anime centers on a civil war within Japan, it might not be on everyone's radar globally yet, but it is truly another masterpiece. Not only does it feature beautiful animation, but the story is also incredibly deep and engaging.
Nippon Sangoku is a manga-to-anime adaptation that premiered its first episode on April 5, 2026, and its second on April 12, 2026 (Japan Standard Time). Since I haven't read the manga and this is a spoiler-free post, I’d like to talk about the title first. When I heard it was airing this season, I was super excited because I suspected the story would involve Japan being split into three kingdoms. It turns out my predictions were right! The "Sangoku" (三国) in the title refers to the famous "Three Kingdoms" concept. In the anime, Japan has actually collapsed and is waiting for unification.
Whenever a country is divided, it eventually seeks unification. After a long series of events, the Japan of Nippon Sangoku is now pursuing that unification through war. While the concept might feel familiar to fans of the Kingdom series—since Kingdom also deals with unification— Nippon Sangoku is much more violent and brutal. Personally, I find Nippon Sangoku even scarier than Kingdom, but at the same time, the animation is incredibly well-executed and truly beautiful.
The animation of Nippon Sangoku is amazing, and the story is full of unexpected twists. I really want to recommend it to everyone, but as I mentioned, it is incredibly violent and brutal. If you can handle that, Nippon Sangoku is definitely for you. However, if you can't tolerate graphic content, you might find it difficult to watch. Even though we are only at the beginning of the story, it is already full of violence, and I assume there will be even more in the upcoming episodes. If you can’t stand that kind of intensity, you won’t be able to enjoy it, so unfortunately Nippon Sangoku might be a skip for you.

The Last Best New Anime of Spring 2026: Daemons of the Shadow Realm
After sharing the Witch Hat Atelier and Nippon Sangoku, the last title I want to share with everyone is the Daemons of the Shadow Realm, also known as the Yomi no Tsugai (黄泉のツガイ). Daemons of the Shadow Realm shares the same author of Fullmetal Alchemist, the Hiromu Arakawa, a super famous manga artist with incredible experiences.
There are two reasons why Daemons of the Shadow Realm is one of the best new anime of Spring 2026 for me. The first is the creator, Hiromu Arakawa. Although I’m not a "super fan" of Fullmetal Alchemist, there is no question that she is an incredibly experienced author. When it comes to manga and anime, an author’s experience matters; it deeply affects the quality of the work. With a veteran like Arakawa at the helm, we can trust that Daemons of the Shadow Realm will deliver a consistently strong story, amazing character development, and even more incredible plot twists. Since she created the world-renowned Fullmetal Alchemist, just wondering whether Daemons of the Shadow Realm can surpass it is interesting enough for me.
The next reason is the incredibly engaging plot. Although you can feel a strong "shonen" vibe just from the poster, Daemons of the Shadow Realm offers a uniquely interesting story. I’m not going to spoil anything here, but as someone who has watched tons of shonen works, this series still managed to deliver an amazing plot twist. It blends a lot of different "spices" together to make the narrative super compelling. Trust me—even if it feels like a classic shonen at first, it will still amaze you because the author has prepared so many twists for us.
Unlike the previous titles, Witch Hat Atelier and Nippon Sangoku, Daemons of the Shadow Realm is a series I can recommend to everyone. It has great pacing; even within the first two episodes, we’ve already seen amazing plot twists. Plus, it doesn’t have any terrifying or overly graphic scenes, so you can watch it anywhere, anytime. While it has a strong "shonen" vibe, that actually makes it easier to share with others, as the shonen genre appeals to so many people.

The Non-Sequel Anime That Amazed Me: MAO
Besides Witch Hat Atelier, Nippon Sangoku, and Daemons of the Shadow Realm, there is one more amazing title I want to share with everyone: MAO. I know the title might sound a bit unusual, but it really is called MAO. For those who have watched a lot of anime, you might be confused—the "MAO" here doesn't refer to Maou (Demon King/魔王), but rather to Mao (摩緒). It is simply the name of the main character.
MAO is quite similar to Daemons of the Shadow Realm in that it is the latest work from a legendary, experienced author. That author is Rumiko Takahashi; even if you aren't familiar with her name, you definitely know her work. She is the creator of Inuyasha, Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, and many others.
Since MAO is less popular than the other titles I've mentioned, you might not have even heard of it before, but it is a truly interesting anime. It combines several different elements into an incredible story. As a veteran creator, Rumiko Takahashi manages these elements wonderfully, making Nanoka Kiba’s journey feel intense and exciting.
MAO is a story-heavy anime that follows a continuous, mystery-focused narrative. While the plot is amazing, it is also similar to the 6th GeGeGe no Kitarō in the way it focuses on solving mysteries. If you are someone who enjoys a good mystery, MAO is definitely a must-watch; however, if you are looking for a fast-paced story or aren't really into mysteries, you might want to skip it for now. Since MAO has only aired two episodes, it is still in the beginning stages and focuses more on individual mysteries than the overarching plot. Once more episodes have aired, you might find it easier to focus on the bigger, more interesting main storyline.
