Daemons of the Shadow Realm Review: The Must-Watch Shonen of Spring 2026

Forget the sequels! With only 2 episodes, Daemons of the Shadow Realm has gone viral. Everyone is calling it a 10/10 masterpiece—the Shonen you need in 2026!
Spring 2026 is a great season for every Shonen lover. Not only do we have One Piece, Dr. Stone, and Iruma-kun returning, but we also have the new series Daemons of the Shadow Realm, also known as Yomi no Tsugai (黄泉のツガイ). Since it is only the beginning of the season, you may not have heard of it yet, but Daemons of the Shadow Realm is a fantastic anime that has already gone viral in the internet.
Currently, Daemons of the Shadow Realm has only two episodes; Episode 1 aired on April 4, 2026, followed by Episode 2 on April 11, 2026. Even before the show premiered, it had already caught my attention because it is the latest work from Hiromu Arakawa, the author of Fullmetal Alchemist. Given that Fullmetal Alchemist is such a legendary series in anime history, I have been following the development of Daemons of the Shadow Realm very closely.
Of course, sharing the same author doesn’t guarantee success; unfortunately, some new works don’t last long or fail to gain popularity online. Just because it is Hiromu Arakawa's latest project doesn’t automatically mean Daemons of the Shadow Realm will be great, we need to watch it for ourselves. However, after watching it myself, I can confidently say that Daemons of the Shadow Realm is definitely one of the best anime of Spring 2026. Even if you aren't a Shonen lover, you will be amazed by it.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm is an anime with so much to discuss. Not only does it deliver Hiromu Arakawa's nostalgic art style, but it also features incredible plot twists, amazing voice acting, and great battles—especially in Episode 2. The action in the second episode was so impressive that I couldn't stop myself from rewatching it again and again. After seeing it for myself, I feel this is such an incredible title that everyone should watch it and join the conversation. In this post, I will dive deep into the series to help everyone get to know Daemons of the Shadow Realm better.

The Latest Work from Hiromu Arakawa: Daemons of the Shadow Realm
Before diving into Daemons of the Shadow Realm, please note that this post is free of manga spoilers. Although the series originated as a manga, which currently has 12 volumes, this post focuses only on the anime content so that everyone can enjoy it easily. However, please be aware that there are episodic spoilers for the anime. If you want to avoid all spoilers, please stop scrolling now!
Daemons of the Shadow Realm is the latest work by Hiromu Arakawa, the author of Fullmetal Alchemist. While sharing an author doesn’t guarantee quality—and we shouldn't claim a show is the "best" just because of a name—the art style is unmistakably similar to Fullmetal Alchemist. For better or worse, this art style provides a real sense of nostalgia. Since both works center on two main characters who are siblings, the resemblance is even stronger.
For fans of Shonen and Fullmetal Alchemist, Daemons of the Shadow Realm captures that same "flavor," making it a must-try. However, if you aren't usually into Shonen, you might feel tempted to skip it because it looks so familiar. After watching it myself, I can admit it has a very strong Shonen feel, and even the character designs are quite traditional for the genre. However, it features amazing plot twists that set it apart from almost any other Shonen series before it.
Shonen series usually have plot twists, but most don't introduce them in the very first episode. Typically, a Shonen anime uses Episode 1 for world-building, explanations, and power awakenings—just like One Piece, Bleach, and Naruto. Most Shonen avoid big twists right away, but Daemons of the Shadow Realm does the exact opposite. As a huge Shonen lover who has watched countless series, I'm very familiar with how these stories usually flow, yet I completely guessed wrong with this one. Personally, I was thrilled to be proven wrong! This amazing plot twist caught my attention instantly and left me incredibly excited for what's coming next.

Why Daemons of the Shadow Realm Stands Out from Other Shonen: The Amazing Plot Twist
I’m not sure if it was a coincidence or if Hiromu Arakawa purposely designed the story this way, but the plot twist in Daemons of the Shadow Realm is truly amazing. The series didn't go viral for no reason; it really gives people something to talk about. In fact, the most discussed topic surrounding the show is its incredible twists. Even within just two episodes, Daemons of the Shadow Realm has already delivered several surprises that keep us excited and wanting more throughout the entire episode.
In the very beginning of Episode 1, Daemons of the Shadow Realm hints that the story will center on the twins, Asa and Yuru. Since the story progresses from Yuru’s point of view, we see that he has grown into a golden-haired boy who is quite loved by everyone around him—and voiced by Kensho Ono. But who is Asa? At the start, we only see Asa as a baby and know that they have black hair, but we don't know what Asa looks like in the current timeline.
Once we learn that Yuru has a twin, the story lures us in and makes us look forward to seeing what Asa looks like in the current timeline. The plot introduces three different black-haired characters, and each one makes you wonder: "Is this Asa?" While it might seem like an easy question when written down, almost everyone guessed wrong when the truth was finally revealed. We didn't get it wrong because we weren't paying attention; rather, the story included so many mysterious elements that it made the truth very difficult to predict.
Villages vs. helicopters, arrows vs. guns, humans vs. Tsugais, and ancient culture vs. modern technology—between the secret of Asa and Yuru, the mysterious dragon’s roar, and the death of countless villagers, so much has happened in Daemons of the Shadow Realm within just two episodes. These elements and events make Asa's true identity difficult to pin down, naturally drawing every viewer in and leaving them eager to see what happens next.
The Power System of Daemons of the Shadow Realm: The Mysterious Tsugai System
As a Shonen series, Daemons of the Shadow Realm naturally features its own unique power system. Just as One Piece has Devil Fruits, Naruto has Chakra, and Bleach has Zanpakutō, Daemons of the Shadow Realm introduces the Tsugai system. For those who haven't watched the show yet, let me briefly explain what a Tsugai (ツガイ) is.
Since Daemons of the Shadow Realm has only aired its second episode, many secrets of the Tsugai haven't been revealed yet. From what I understand, Tsugai are special creatures that, once summoned, listen to, obey, and work for their masters. Additionally, the Tsugai system is quite similar to the Stands in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure—only those who use the system themselves are able to see other Tsugai.
From the battles in Episode 2, it seems there is a difference in rank among the Tsugai; lower-ranking Tsugai appear unable to stand against those of a higher rank. While the specifics haven't been revealed yet, after Yuru summoned Sayuu-sama (左右様—Left and Right), they defeated the enemies with ease and followed Yuru's orders without breaking a sweat. There is a scene where one of the enemies, Gabby, uses all of her power combined with her Tsugai to fight Sayuu-sama. Despite giving everything they had, they were ultimately defeated very easily.
While Tsugai can only be seen by other Tsugai users, they appear to have physical bodies, unlike the Stands in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. From what we see in Episodes 1 and 2, Sayuu-sama are not only able to move around and physically help others, but they can even be hit by rocks. These small details suggest that Tsugai are not just spiritual energy, but actually exist physically in that world. Additionally, because they have physical bodies, they don't seem to vanish once they've completed an order, and their masters don't seem to be able to make them disappear instantly. Of course, it’s possible Yuru just doesn't know how to do it yet, and we might see them disappear in upcoming episodes, but for now, it seems they remain present in the world at all times.

What Happens Next: The Journey of Yuru
Although Daemons of the Shadow Realm features an amazing plot twist—and I failed to guess Asa's true identity—it still falls under the Shonen genre, so we can roughly guess what might happen in the upcoming episodes. So much happened in the first two episodes that not only is Yuru super confused, but we as viewers also need some answers. Because of this, the upcoming episodes will likely start by providing some much-needed explanations.
Following the explanations, Episode 2 introduced an organization that seems to be the primary antagonist, much like in other Shonen works. While there is a possibility this group could eventually become Yuru’s allies, so much has happened already that Yuru likely won't forgive them easily. Therefore, after the initial explanations, I believe the story will move into a major conflict phase. Personally, I think this conflict will span several episodes; as Yuru begins living in a completely different world, he is going to face a lot of struggles—both emotionally and physically.
During these episodes, we will surely see many more incredible battles, as that is a staple of the Shonen genre. Along with the action, we will likely see some internal conflict between Yuru and Sayuu-sama. While they seem to get along well for now, Yuru has lived in a peaceful, isolated world for so long that it will be difficult for him to suddenly be ready for combat or to accept these drastic changes without any complaints.
Since Daemons of the Shadow Realm falls under the Shonen genre, I can guess the direction of the story to a certain degree. However, I personally don't think my predictions will be very accurate, as the author, Hiromu Arakawa, has brilliantly mixed so many different elements together. While the series follows the "golden formula" of Shonen, the presence of these unique elements makes it truly hard to predict. Even if I keep failing to guess what happens next, I’ll always prefer a story with amazing plot twists and unpredictable episodes over one where I can easily guess the ending.

Conclusion:
Daemons of the Shadow Realm is a Shonen anime, it is truly great and definitely a must-watch for everyone. Beyond the amazing plot twists, the journey of our main character, Yuru, is also one of the biggest highlights. Yuru lived a peaceful life for many years, and although he couldn't actually meet his sister, he endured everything in the hope that they would one day live happily together. However, it turned out that everything was a lie—he had been living a fake life all along.
From now on, Yuru will have to face a lot of conflicts, lies and battles, all by himself, since after the story starts, he can no longer trust everyone, as most of the people are just using him, and wanted him to live under a terrible lie. Yuru had the Sayuu-sama on his side, he can always survive and overcome every difficulties by power force, but what kind of future is waiting for him is what I am really looking forward to. If there is a happy ending waiting for him, there is also a terrible bad ending waiting for him. Here’s a great YouTube video worth checking out.
