Synopsis
Oniyasha is a twelve-year-old from a family of sarugaku performers, think early Noh theater, in 14th-century Japan, but he couldn't care less about dancing. His dad runs the Kanze troupe, everyone around him lives and breathes performance, but Oniyasha just drifts through it all wondering why any of it matters. Then he sees a dance that actually hits him, and something clicks. That's the starting thread of World Is Dancing, a seinen drama set during the Muromachi period when the Northern and Southern Courts were tearing each other apart and Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu was consolidating power. The political backdrop isn't just set dressing either, Yoshimitsu takes an interest in Oniyasha's talent, which means art and power get tangled up in ways that feel genuinely uncomfortable. CygamesPictures is handling the animation, and the period setting gives them room to do something visually distinct. The tone is quiet and introspective, closer to Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu than anything action-driven. If that show's exploration of traditional performance and generational artistic weight resonated with you, this is covering similar emotional territory through a completely different art form. There are also shades of Welcome to the Ballroom in how it captures the obsessive pursuit of physical expression. It's a slow burn about a kid figuring out what art means to him while history reshapes the world around him.

sumi_e★★★☆☆VerifiedEP 6First episode where they didnt end with a proper payoff and will need to wait for the next episode to see the payoff.
rinn123★★★☆☆VerifiedEP 6Love the way they depict the inspirational scenes so artistically.
abelferrazmiku★★★★☆EP 6that old monk forcing liquor into oniyasha mouth to wake him up was top tier comedy before the show turned completely tragic
lordgenome★★★★☆EP 6Poor Ishiya getting hung from a tree just because Oniyasha lost, the troupe members really lost their minds over that defeat
quincy_quiver★★★★☆EP 6that white haired farmer telling him to listen to the rhythm of labor actually made total sense and the scene where the dirt bursts into flowers was stunning
mikasa_ackerman★★★☆☆EP 6you get this beautiful high of oniyasha finding his new vision and then samurai show up and ruin everything my stomach turned watching tokusan get slashed down
tabun_titan★★★☆☆EP 6seeing oniyasha barf rainbow sparkles into the river after getting wasted made me laugh so hard and then the end hit like a brick truck

zangetsu_zen★★★★☆EP 5The training montage where Chiharu was observing the cat and the turtle was hilarious, and it really highlighted her weird way of thinking. Seeing those small nature moments turn into choreography was a highlight of the episode.
sailor_iron_mouse★★★★☆EP 5I loved when Oniyasha started acting like a cat in the woods and he was just meowing and jumping around to find a new move it was so goofy but it actually helped his lion dance feel different
fish_eye★★★★☆EP 5Zojiro is such a jerk for what he said to Chiharu after the duel ended and she was already crying he really did not have to go that hard on her when she was down
mikau_281★★★☆☆EP 5Watching the crowd choose the safe performance over the innovative lion dance was frustrating and it shows how hard it is to change things Oniyasha put so much soul into those movements even if the judges hated it
tuxedo_mask_393★★★☆☆EP 5It killed me when that comb got crushed underfoot because you could see how much that gift from Nariko meant to her. I know Chiharu was being a bit petty and jealous but seeing her realize she messed up too late was a total gut punch. The way the animation went all abstract when they met was beautiful and really showed their tension.
