Synopsis
Oniyasha is a twelve-year-old from a family of sarugaku performers, think early Noh theater, in 14th-century Japan, but he couldn't care less about dancing. His dad runs the Kanze troupe, everyone around him lives and breathes performance, but Oniyasha just drifts through it all wondering why any of it matters. Then he sees a dance that actually hits him, and something clicks. That's the starting thread of World Is Dancing, a seinen drama set during the Muromachi period when the Northern and Southern Courts were tearing each other apart and Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu was consolidating power. The political backdrop isn't just set dressing either, Yoshimitsu takes an interest in Oniyasha's talent, which means art and power get tangled up in ways that feel genuinely uncomfortable. CygamesPictures is handling the animation, and the period setting gives them room to do something visually distinct. The tone is quiet and introspective, closer to Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu than anything action-driven. If that show's exploration of traditional performance and generational artistic weight resonated with you, this is covering similar emotional territory through a completely different art form. There are also shades of Welcome to the Ballroom in how it captures the obsessive pursuit of physical expression. It's a slow burn about a kid figuring out what art means to him while history reshapes the world around him.

Wait Inomaru is FIFTEEN?? I've been picturing him as a grown man this whole time and now I can't unsee it. Also I missed half the Shiokumi lyrics because HIDIVE dropped the subs again. Can we get a competent platform for this show already
Fujiwaka licking rice off a kid's finger was pure nightmare fuel. I get the historical angle but this episode leaned way too hard into making him a creep. The Onimaru rewrite arc though? Solid. Those hidden feelings just blooming on stage in the finale made up for a lot.
The moment Chiharu found Onimaru's draft scroll and started singing those verses I got chills. That hallway scene where their voices carried through the building was the heart of this episode. The Fujiwaka stuff before it was rough but everything after felt earned.
Not really sure if i got the message for the dance this episode. But i guess it's supposed to look like a bridge that crosses over to death, and in that era where there isnt much visual symbolization of that it immediately connects the audience to that bridge and thoughts related to it. I wish they would show more about the dance like it previous episodes though, as this episode felt more like they wre just showing how people feel watching the dance, not how the dance looks like itself.
Where did the love for this series went to...I hope that feeling can be brought back. These few episode is mediocre at best. Whatever is discussed doesnt move me emotionally.
Oniyasha Sotowa Komachi dance was insane visual work from Cygames. The mist turning the wooden stage into a foggy river gave me absolute chills and the audience seeing their lost loved ones hit so hard
Yoshimitsu pulling out his blade over a forfeited match proves he is the ultimate unhinged fanboy. He really put a sword right to Zojiro throat just because he was denied a show
that sotoba komachi dance felt almost creepy with how raw it got and seeing the audience actually hallucinate their lost family members made me realize how deep this show is getting
zojiro just dropping to his knees and giving up caught me off guard and then the shogun pulled a literal sword on him on stage
Very slow pacing and unrelatable. Just a touch of philosophical discussion but quite surface level and not driven too much by the story itself.
How are you gonna drop a performance this huge and not subtitle the lyrics during the debate between the monk and the old woman on stage? You can tell Oniyasha is pouring his whole soul into that dance for Toku but you miss half the meaning when HIDIVE leaves the poetry completely untranslated like that

First episode where they didnt end with a proper payoff and will need to wait for the next episode to see the payoff.
