The Summer Hikaru Died
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Imagine someone you've known your entire life goes missing in the mountains for a week. When he comes back, he looks the same, talks the same, but something is off. You can feel it. And then one day, the thing wearing his face drops the act and shows you what it really is, and asks you, almost desperately, not to tell anyone. That's where Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu starts, and it only gets more unsettling from there. This 12-episode TV series follows Yoshiki, a kid in a quiet rural village who has to reckon with the fact that his childhood best friend Hikaru is gone, replaced by some kind of entity that doesn't fully understand what it means to be human. The creature isn't malicious exactly, it's almost childlike, curious about everyday life, but the real Hikaru is still missing, and the village starts experiencing things that can't be easily explained. The tone here is slow-burn psychological horror with genuine emotional weight. CygamesPictures nails the rural atmosphere, making the setting feel isolated and heavy in a way that gets under your skin. Taro Umebayashi's soundtrack leans into that unease perfectly. If you liked the creeping village dread of Shiki, the "something inhuman is pretending to be someone you love" tension of Parasyte, or the layered mystery of Summer Time Rendering, this hits a similar nerve. It's less about jump scares and more about the quiet horror of grief and the uncanny.

This episode relies heavily on body horror; the physical creaking of Hikaru's bones creates genuine unease and tension. It's interesting to see how a seemingly normal town becomes unsettling through small visual details that generate suspense.
If the girl gets killed
Anime is really well done. Genuinely one of the only horrors I would dare to watch.
i really enjoyed the anime, i love their dynamic and the classic Japanese low quality creepy stuff! i’m sad that the author didn’t go through with the chapter 0 storyline and now there’s supposedly ‘’nothing romantic” between them.
The best moment is when Yoshiki ask Hikaru "You're not Hikaru, aren't you?" I CRY IN THAT PART
It took me two tries to finish the first ep. I stopped halfway through because of the slow pacing. But decided to try again & push thorugh, and the ending really got me hooked. So there's that. Plus, the animation is beautiful!
What an amazing episode 😭😭
Amazing showing hikarus obsession and showing yoshikis dependence on hikaru was such an amazing scene
You're...Not Hikaru are you...
i'm so obsessed with the parallel of yoshiki begging hikaru to stay with him... this show genuinely is so good and i cannot wait for season 2
The story starts getting interesting here onwards. Love the horror essence of it, the conflicting emotions, the lore. Storyline wise, this anime definitely pulled it off. I can forsee binging this in a day 😭
Pretty dark but it is what it is
Can't wait to see the mystery play out!
Sad but nice
Kaoru has a terrifying encounter in the bathroom, prompting “Hikaru” to investigate. This episode ramps up the creepiness, paying homage to classic Japanese horror tropes while also delving into surreal sequences that give us another peek into Yoshiki’s past. I’m hoping to see more entities and ghosts as the story progresses. What else could be lurking around?
The annual summer festival brings excitement along with a slight sense of unease. The highlight of this episode was getting a glimpse into the town’s history and beliefs, leaving me eager to learn more. Watching Yoshiki continue to grapple with his complicated feelings toward the new Hikaru while trying to come to terms with the loss of his friend is heartbreaking. I can already tell I’ll be shedding some tears in the episodes to come!
Yoshiki kamu kenapa, nak?
Btw, ending creditnya bagus)
Misterinya mulai dikupas pelan-pelan. Tapi saya agak bingung dengan respons Yoshiki pada Hikaru. Udah jelas dia seposesif itu. Lumayan toxic dan mengekang ya hubungan mereka.
