Synopsis
In the horror manga world, nobody draws images as disturbing as Junji Ito, the guy who draws images so disturbing they burrow into your brain and stay there. This 12-episode TV series adapts a bunch of his short stories into an anthology format, and each episode drops you into a completely different nightmare. One week it's a cursed jade carving that opens holes across a person's body, the next it's a decades-long dream you can't wake from, or a beautiful woman at a foggy crossroad offering advice you really don't want to follow. You'll meet Tomie, the impossibly alluring girl who drives men to obsession and madness, and Souichi, a creepy kid who treats dark curses like playground pranks. The standalone structure means you can dip in anywhere without committing to a long plot, which honestly makes it perfect for late-night viewing when you want something unsettling but contained. The vibe is less jump-scares and more slow, creeping dread, that feeling where something is deeply wrong but you can't look away. If you liked the eerie atmosphere of Boogiepop Phantom or the body horror elements in Parasyte, this hits similar notes but in bite-sized doses. Fair warning: Studio Deen's animation doesn't always capture the full intensity of Ito's art on the page, but the stories themselves are strong enough to carry it. Go in expecting weird, grotesque, and psychologically uncomfortable, and you'll have a good time, or at least an interesting one.

The anime is great but you all need buy the comic
One of the better stories is Smashed, I personally enjoyed it. Rumours did not make it work in the adaptation.
I would rather skip Supernatural Transfer Student. Scarecrow is worth watching even though there were many unanswered questions hanging.
Greased is a very weird story but somehow watchable. Bridge is worth watching even the other stories in the collection seem too much.
Painter is so far the most well-adapted story in this collection. The animation for Blood Bubble Bushes is not done well.
Honored Ancestors is worth watching. As for Circus Comes to Town, I would rather read the manga instead.
The first story didn't really amaze but Town of No Roads definitely creeped me out. I really loved the ending of the second story
I felt very uncomfortable watching Window Next Door which is good. I loved Gentle Goodbye so much
As someone who loves cliffhangers, the Ongoing Tale of Ochikiri's concept has so much potential.
Shiver has a very good potential to become a well-written mystery script. House of puppet is a good episode too, though I wish they had given the girlfriend another ending.
I personally love the Crossroads Pretty Boy episode, it has eerie music and builds up the mystery.
This was very unsettling but satisfying because the animation itself was unnerving.
The animation could've done a lot better to match Junji Ito's illustrations.
Smashed has a genuinely clever concept about addiction. the finale tries to tie everything together with Souichi and Fuchi but ends up feeling rushed. don't come for me. love the manga so much tho
Supernatural Transfer Student has a cool premise with Tsukano and the club leader Shibayama but loses itself in too many left turns. Scarecrow is weird for the sake of weird and doesn't really go anywhere??
Glyceride is one of my Ito faves. peak gross-out Ito and somehow works because of how unhinged it gets. Yui's brother Goro is the kind of character you just want gone immediately. Bridge has a cool concept but plays out more like a punchline than horror.
Tomie finally makes her entrance and you know she's that ghurl. 💅🏻 the painter Mori has no idea what he's gotten himself into. Blood-Bubble Bushes is bizarre but weirdly beautiful.
looovve Honored Ancestors, the connected heads imagery is the stuff of nightmares. Risa's segment has potential but loses steam midway. uneven ep but Honored Ancestors alone makes it worth it
First story was pretty mid. Second story was def creepier in a way that it's not just full on supernatural. imagine losing your privacy that even your family becomes a creep. loved the ending though
Window Next Door is creepy af the va did a real good job. loovve Gentle Goodbye is not your typical Ito horror but it lands way harder emotionally than expected
