📖 SYNOPSIS

Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu originated from the Touken Ranbu video game, developed by DMM Games and Nitroplus. The anime, produced by Ufotable and Aniplex, was directed by Toshiyuki Shirai with music by Hideyuki Fukasawa. It first aired from July 1 to September 23, 2017, consisting of 13 episodes, and includes a movie adaptation, Touken Ranbu: The Movie, released in 2019. The story set in 1863 during the Bakumatsu period, a tumultuous era marked by conflict between pro-shogunate and anti-shogunate factions, Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu introduces a unique premise. The story centers on Tōken danshi, or Sword Warriors, who are personifications of historical Japanese swords, a concept derived from tsukumogami folklore where inanimate objects gain sentience. These warriors are brought to life by a Saniwa, a sage-like figure, and their mission is to protect the correct flow of history from the Jikan sokōgun, or Time Retrograde Army, a group intent on altering past events to change the future.
