Synopsis

Ancient blades given human form and flung back through time to safeguard history from being rewritten, that's the premise, and ufotable makes every second of it look gorgeous. Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu is a 13-episode TV series set during Japan's Bakumatsu period in 1863, following Izuminokami Kanesada and Horikawa Kunihiro, two sword warriors who manifest as humans from their original blades once wielded by the legendary Toshizou Hijikata. They're deployed from the future to stop the Time Retrograde Army, a mysterious force hell-bent on altering history's course. Along the way, they team up with other sword warriors, Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki, Tonbokiri, Tsurumaru Kuninaga, each with their own ties to Japan's samurai past. The real draw here is the animation. This is ufotable doing what ufotable does best: fluid sword fights, detailed backgrounds, and action sequences that genuinely rival their Fate work. The tone is serious and grounded despite the fantasy premise, leaning more into the weight of protecting history than into comedy. Hideyuki Fukasawa's soundtrack gives the battles real gravity. If you liked Sengoku Basara's stylized samurai action or wanted something with the energy of Samurai Champloo but wrapped in a time-travel framework, this fits that space. It's also a more action-driven counterpart to Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, which takes the same cast in a lighter direction. This one picks the sword fights and doesn't look back.

This is one of my favorite episodes because we finally get to see the First and Second Units work together. The First Unit doesn't feel quite as unstoppable as before, but they're still incredibly strong. This episode also starts to answer the question from the previous episode about what it really means to protect history. The answer isn't completely clear yet, but it definitely makes you want to keep watching. And what will happen to Horikawa Kunihiro? What is he planning, and how will he choose to protect history? Let's find out in this episode.

You have to watch this episode all the way to the end, especially to see Horikawa Kunihiro's change and the difficult decision Izuminokami Kanesada has to make because of it. This episode also raises an interesting question: does protecting history mean you can never change a single person's fate? We see many innocent people lose their lives, and they're all part of history. Even if the major historical events remain the same, is that really what it means to protect history? These are the kinds of thought provoking questions this anime leaves you with.
