This episode really showed me just how powerful the First Unit is. I thought they were only a little stronger than the Second Unit, but I was completely wrong—they're on a whole different level. The Second Unit struggled against just one ōdachi, while even the weakest member of the First Unit could defeat one with ease. And they weren't fighting just one—they were taking on multiple odachi at the same time. That was seriously impressive.

The synchronized First Unit brings some fresh energy to the table. The crisp combat animation, with the incredible fast pacing, and confident tone was too good, and provided some spectacular character development for the new veteran.

Episode Context

A hard reset at the midpoint. Episode 7 pivots away from the familiar Second Unit and drops viewers into the First Unit's world, led by Yamanbagiri Kunihiro, as they deploy to 1565 Kyoto. The tone shifts noticeably, this is more measured and investigative than the action-heavy episodes preceding it. Expect suspense over spectacle as the unit navigates deceptively calm city streets, piecing together clues about a temporal disturbance. Rumors of a masked street slasher thread an element of mystery through the mission, giving ufotable room to build atmosphere rather than chain fight sequences. Character dynamics within the First Unit get genuine breathing room here, establishing new personalities and interpersonal tensions. Themes of duty and the weight of preserving history come through strongly. A deliberate change of pace that rewards patient viewers.
