Synopsis

In the ruins of a monster-infested Japan, flesh-eating creatures called Hiruko roam freely, and somewhere out there is a place called 'Heaven.' That's about all Maru, a 15-year-old with mysterious abilities, and Kiruko, a sharp and resourceful young woman, have to go on as they trek through the ruins of civilization trying to find it. Meanwhile, in a completely separate storyline, a group of kids live in a pristine, isolated facility where everything seems peaceful — until one of them, Tokio, gets a strange message asking if she wants to go outside. The show alternates between these two narratives, and the slow reveal of how they connect is where it really hooks you. Production I.G handles the animation, and it looks gorgeous — the contrast between the lush, sterile facility and the crumbling outside world does a lot of heavy lifting for the atmosphere. The tone sits in this unsettling space where things feel slightly off even during calm moments, which keeps you on edge throughout all 13 episodes. If you liked The Promised Neverland's sense of children discovering dark truths, or the way Made in Abyss pairs beautiful visuals with something deeply unsettling underneath, this is in that same lane. It's a seinen manga adaptation, so it's not afraid to sit with uncomfortable ideas about identity, bodily autonomy, and what survival actually costs. The mystery unfolds patiently, and it rewards you for paying attention.
