Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War

The Hollowfication incident in the human world. Shiba Isshin and Kurosaki Masaki’s love story wasn't simple or peaceful, a lot of tragic events occurred. Aizen Sosuke, a character we are all too familiar with, indirectly triggered a Hollowfication incident in the human world, and Masaki became its victim. Hollowfication is something we've witnessed before. If a Shinigami gets affected, we don't need to worry too much since Urahara Kisuke can handle it, but for a Quincy, it's a completely different story. Quincies and Hollows have the absolute worst compatibility, meaning there is no easy or standard way to save Masaki. Because of this, Isshin decides to sacrifice himself. The connection between Yhwach and Kurosaki Ichigo. When Yhwach called Ichigo his child, we couldn't quite understand what he meant, but everything makes sense now. Yhwach is the progenitor of every Quincy, and since Masaki gave birth to Ichigo, Ichigo is directly tied to Yhwach's bloodline. To make matters even darker, Yhwach is actually the true culprit behind his mother's death. With Episode 12, we finally get a clear picture of Ichigo’s past and just how terrifying Yhwach truly is. Once his origin is revealed, Ichigo is able to stand tall once again and seize the opportunity to unlock his true power.

The backstory of Shiba Isshin. After going through so many events, Ichigo finally gets a chance to slow down and listen to his father talk about the history of the Kurosaki family. Since time doesn't pass very quickly in the Bleach timeline, Ichigo never really questioned his past. For us viewers, though, we've definitely felt all along that there was a hidden secret in his history. Through the earlier Bleach anime, we knew that Ichigo’s mother died suddenly, which drastically changed his personality. Later on, we learned that Ichigo’s father was a Shinigami, which somewhat explained why Ichigo could become a Shinigami himself, but that still didn't fully explain his massive potential. Starting in Episode 11, we finally get a glimpse of what actually happened in the past. The love story between Shiba Isshin and Kurosaki Masaki. Although we've followed Ichigo’s journey for so long, we didn't really expect or guess that he had such a complicated past. Ichigo’s father is a Shinigami, but his mother actually came from a completely different world, she was a Quincy. Quincies and Shinigami shouldn't get too close since they share a brutal history, but Shiba Isshin and Kurosaki Masaki show us something different. Of course, Isshin knew what a Quincy was, and Masaki kind of understood what would happen when a Shinigami met a Quincy. Even though they knew the risks, Masaki was still honest and spoke the truth, and Isshin accepted everything she told him.

A new journey begins. Although Soul Society and Ichigo faced their greatest despair, their new journey starts in Episode 9. The main character, Ichigo, will of course get another chance to become stronger, but Renji is given the exact same opportunity. To be honest, Renji isn't typically seen as a top-tier character, but since he has been with us from the very beginning, seeing him get a chance to power up genuinely makes me happy. As someone who has read and watched a lot of shounen series, I have to admit I already kind of guessed what was coming next. Most of the time, shounen characters have a massive feast to recover their bodies, and the actual training begins right after. While these meal scenes are mostly dialogue and can feel a bit slow, they are still an essential part of the shounen genre. Kenpachi vs Kenpachi. The main highlight of Episode 9 is the epic fight between Kenpachi and Kenpachi. The team did a fantastic job, the animation is amazing! Ever since Yhwach showed us the memories from the battle a thousand years ago, we knew that Unohana Retsu was actually an extremely powerful character. Before seeing Yhwach's memories, I never would have thought Retsu could actually compete with Zaraki Kenpachi, but the entire Thousand-Year Blood War arc proved me wrong. Retsu can genuinely stand her ground against Kenpachi, and even deal massive damage to him!

A Soul Society full of despair and sadness. Even though Kurosaki Ichigo reaches the Soul Society and gets a beautiful moment of revenge against Yhwach, Yhwach and his army are just too powerful, they end up destroying the entire Soul Society. On top of that, Yhwach even kills the strongest Shinigami, Yamamoto Shigekuni, which naturally leaves the Soul Society filled with despair and sadness. It is natural for everyone to lose their will to fight in a situation like this, but the Shinigami have no choice but to force themselves to stand up and keep fighting. Although the Soul Society was destroyed, they still have an important mission left, and they need to finish it first. The new journey of Kurosaki Ichigo. Even though the Soul Society is still full of despair and sadness, our Ichigo needs to start a new journey immediately. I bet Ichigo himself has lost his way and doesn't know what to do next, but the Royal Guard, also known as Zero Division or Squad 0, suddenly appears and takes Ichigo away. Ichigo is a key figure for the upcoming mission. So, even though Squad 0 rarely appears in front of others, they have no choice but to take him away. Ichigo is truly someone with unique charisma, everyone likes him and is willing to bet on him, even though he is still far weaker than them.

The Episode 6, one of the best episode. Episode 6 is one of the best episodes. In this episode, we are finally able to witness the strongest Shinigami, Yamamoto Shigekuni, using his full power in battle. Yamamoto is a long-standing character we've known for a while, so of course, all of us were looking forward to seeing him give it his all. If you've watched Episode 6, you'll understand what I'm saying. The whole episode is just so amazing, starting from the animation and BGM, all the way to the voice acting, everything is top-tier. If you haven't watched it yet, I strongly suggest everyone give it a try. Strongest vs. Strongest. The key highlight of Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 6 is, of course, strongest vs. strongest. The strongest leaders from both the Shinigami and Quincy sides have finally met, and they start an incredible fight. Yamamoto had actually met Yhwach before, and his hatred toward Yhwach hasn't decreased at all, so the moment they meet, the fight starts immediately. Just as everyone thought, including me, Yamamoto's Bankai is truly amazing, he really had the power to kill anyone easily. With Episode 6, we can finally understand why Aizen Sousuke had to go through so many steps just to seal Yamamoto, because he is simply too strong. When I first watched it, I hoped Yamamoto could win, but as it turns out, Yhwach was fully prepared for him.

The one-sided war continues. The overwhelming despair of Episode 4 carries right over into Episode 5. It’s almost impossible for the Shinigami to find a solution in just a single episode, especially when the enemy is so well-prepared, so in the first half of Episode 5, we witness even more bloodshed on the Shinigami side. Personally, I think it’s heartbreaking to watch characters we know so well, like Renji, Rukia, and Byakuya, get so heavily damaged. But since the Quincy are so thoroughly prepared, even we as viewers can’t really offer any good solutions. Right from the moment they launched their attack, the Quincy were already several steps ahead of the Shinigami. The strongest captain joins the fight. Fortunately for the Shinigami, the second half of Episode 5 finally sees the Captain-Commander, Genryusai Yamamoto, make his move. He had remained silent since the Quincy invaded, but after realizing that the situation was only getting worse, one of the strongest old men in anime history stepped onto the battlefield himself. Yamamoto joining the fight himself provides a massive boost to the Soul Reapers. Their morale surges, and everyone begins to see a glimmer of hope. Since we haven't seen his Bankai before, we don't know exactly what will happen next, but having that renewed hope is a huge step toward turning the tide of battle.

The final battle of Unohana Retsu. Episode 10 starts with the continuation of the incredible battle between Unohana Retsu and Zaraki Kenpachi. Before watching this episode, I knew Kenpachi was strong, but since he had lost to Ichigo before, I assumed Retsu would win. However, it ended up going in a completely different direction! Kenpachi was truly a monster. Even though his opponent was someone who had lived for at least a thousand years and slaughtered countlessly, including Quincies, even she couldn't bring out 100% of Kenpachi's power. Kenpachi was able to defeat her at a very young age, and now, he has won against her once again. The roots of Kurosaki Ichigo. In order to become stronger, Ichigo first needs to get his Zanpakuto ready, but it seems like something is blocking him. Ichigo didn't really think much about his past before, but now that very past is holding him back from getting stronger, and even from reaching a new form. Personally, I think this is an exciting plot twist. We've followed Ichigo’s journey for so long, yet up until now, we had no real idea about his origins. Diving deep into his past will not only make Ichigo stronger, but it also gives us a chance to truly understand his character.

Amazing anime-exclusive scenes. Thousand-Year Blood War is truly an amazing series. Just when we thought Episode 6 was a top-tier episode, the team amazed us immediately afterward with Episode 7. A lot happens in Episode 7, and while you might have a different experience with it that might leave you feeling a bit mixed, the absolute best part of the episode is the anime-exclusive scenes. If you've read the original manga, the moment you start Episode 7, you will be amazed instantly because of a crazy anime-exclusive scene. If you're an anime-only viewer, you might not fully realize how amazing it is, but when I first watched it, I was truly impressed. The arrival of our hero. After the incredible anime-exclusive scenes, you get to witness another amazing moment in Episode 7, the arrival of our hero, Kurosaki Ichigo. His entrance looks truly incredible, and you can really tell the team put a lot of effort into it. Ichigo doesn't just start with his Shikai, instead, he brings out everything he has right from the beginning. Ichigo looks so cool, and since he knows what's happening, he's totally fired up and unleashes aggressive attacks right away. We all hoped his attacks would work, but since this is Bleach, we know the fight won't stop here. The battle continues, leading to an ending that I don't think everyone will be able to accept.

Shinigami vs. Quincy: Which side will win? The war between the Shinigami and the Quincy continues in Episode 4. Although the Shinigami side has 13 captains and their unique power, Bankai, as their ultimate weapon, the Quincy are simply too well-prepared. While the Shinigami spent years going about their usual routines, the Quincy focused solely on revenge. The level of effort both sides put into preparing for this war is completely different, and it heavily impacts the outcome. Familiar characters like Soifon, Tōshirō, Renji, and Byakuya gave it 100% in battle, but unfortunately, the results were completely one-sided. None of the Shinigami’s attacks had any real effect, while almost every strike from the Quincies landed with devastating impact. The ultimate weapon against Bankai. As if the massive gap in raw power wasn't enough, what brings true despair is the Quincies' ultimate weapon: the ability to seal Bankai. In the world of Bleach, everyone knows that Bankai is a Shinigami's greatest asset. To completely neutralize that strength, Yhwach came up with something truly brilliant. Stealing Bankai, that’s what Yhwach came up with. It’s a brilliant strategy, as it's the fastest and easiest way to neutralize every Shinigami’s core power while blocking them from using their strongest attacks. This was an unthinkable disaster for the Soul Society, but luckily, the 12th Division managed to contact our hero, Ichigo Kurosaki.

The shocking truth and Yamamoto Genryusai. Following Episode 2, Episode 3 is another incredible chapter that takes the anime to an even higher level. For me, the first standout moment is the dialogue between the 12th Division Captain, Mayuri Kurotsuchi, and the Captain-Commander, Genryusai Yamamoto. Yamamoto is quite similar to the typical leaders we know: whenever major trouble arises, he tries to shift the blame and make others take responsibility. I think Mayuri understands this, but instead of just accepting it and staying quiet, he pushes back and drops a huge truth bomb on us. A thousand years ago, the person who failed to finish off Yhwach completely was Yamamoto himself. The disaster for the Shinigami begins. We don't know why Yamamoto didn't finish off Yhwach back then, but now he is paying a huge price for leaving him alive. In the final part of Episode 3, the Quincy invade Soul Society and launch an all-out war. The Shinigami were prepared and on high alert for Quincy movements, yet they still let the invasion happen. Although the war has only just begun, the results are already brutal. Because the Quincies are so well-prepared, their initial attacks hit the Shinigami hard, instantly wiping out a massive number of them. Since this is only the beginning, we can only assume that even more devastating events are waiting for the Shinigami.

The nostalgic reunion between the Arrancars and Ichigo. Episode 1 was the perfect welcome-back, and Episode 2 continuously takes the series to a whole new level. The episode kicks off by reintroducing nostalgic characters like Nel and Pesche. If you stopped watching a long time ago, you might have forgotten who they are, but don't worry, the anime gives us plenty of clues to refresh your memory. If you began your Bleach journey more recently, you'll still remember just how funny and cute Nel and Pesche are, and I think you’ll be happy to see them again. Even though Nel and Pesche are just minor characters, they still play an important role in Ichigo’s journey. Ichigo and the journey to Hueco Mundo. After reuniting with Nel and Pesche, Ichigo once again travels to Hueco Mundo for a short journey. Following the battle with Sousuke Aizen, Hueco Mundo was supposed to be a peaceful place for the Arrancars, but things suddenly changed. Hueco Mundo has become a hell for them, and they have a new ruler, the Quincy. The Quincy aren't interested in changing Hueco Mundo; instead, they want to kidnap everyone there and use them for their ultimate plan. The new leader of the Quincy is Yhwach, a dangerous, selfish, and incredibly ambitious villain. When someone like him becomes the new ruler, you just know that something terrible is coming in the upcoming episodes.

An amazing welcome back from Bleach. Episode 1 is the perfect return for every Bleach fan. It has been almost 10 years since the original anime officially ended! If you are a fan like me, I’m sure you were hyped for its return, and once you started watching, I bet you thoroughly enjoyed the entire episode. No matter how many times I rewatch it, Episode 1 is truly amazing because it has everything we could want: high-quality animation, top-tier voice acting, and most importantly, a great story that gets everyone hyped. Starting with this episode, the plot dives deep into the ultimate enemy force, the Quincy. The Quincy and the Thousand-Year Blood War. In the original anime, the story dived really deep into the Hollows and Shinigami, so it’s only natural for it to now focus on the Quincies. If you stepped away from Bleach a long time ago, you might have started to forget about this group; but if you're someone who began the series more recently, they are definitely a faction you’re curious about. Since it’s only Episode 1, there are still a lot of mysteries waiting for us, but I think the premiere did a fantastic job. It sparks curiosity and sets up the perfect cliffhanger that leaves us eager for the next episode. Personally, Episode 1 isn't the absolute best episode of the arc yet, but it’s definitely the perfect welcome-back for everyone.

As someone who read this part of the manga during its weekly serialization and did not enjoy it, I was not looking to watching this arc. But I did on a friend's recommendation and my opinion has changed. Watching this does not feel like I am rewatching the same story. The adaptation brings in a a lot of very detailed, very stylish scenes that just keep hold of your attention. Every location feels very fresh for a manga reader like myself, like I am revisiting familiar places but with new lenses. I was also really excited to see new things like the appearance of the original Gotei 13. Small changes like this help elevate the overall story and I am hopeful that future episodes will follow suit. Ultimately, I am hyped to see where the anime will take us next.

Definitely one of the chapters that needed to be animated. Everything was cinematic,; the dramatic reveal of Zangetsu, the new "Number One" song playing, and Ichigo's resolve. A really great way to end the first season of this arc.

It was nice to see familiar faces returning. Shikkaku, Ganju, and the fullbringers. The visuals are also spectacular, a breath of fresh air from the solid colors we have been seeing so far. I also really liked the hospital scene - it was really immersive given the war.
