Synopsis

At fourteen, Koyuki Tanaka has absolutely nothing going on. No hobbies, no ambitions, just drifting through middle school on autopilot. Then he rescues a weird-looking dog named Beck from some neighborhood kids, and that chance encounter connects him to Ryusuke Minami — a teenage guitarist who just got back from New York and plays like he was born holding a pick. One jam session later, Koyuki's entire worldview cracks open. He picks up a guitar, and the 26-episode TV series from Madhouse follows what happens when a completely ordinary kid stumbles into the messy, electric world of forming a rock band. What makes Beck work is how grounded it stays. The characters actually struggle — learning instruments is hard, getting gigs is harder, and the music industry doesn't care about your feelings. Koyuki's growth from wallflower to someone who can stand on a stage and mean it unfolds at a pace that feels earned, not rushed. The soundtrack pulls from real rock, blues, and hip-hop influences, giving the whole thing an authenticity most music anime don't bother with. If you liked Nana's raw take on musicians navigating life, or the way Kids on the Slope uses music to deepen friendships, this hits similar notes but through a coming-of-age lens. It's emotional without being melodramatic, quiet in the right moments, and loud when it counts. A genuine story about finding the thing that makes you feel alive.
