Synopsis
According to the Republic, its war against the autonomous Legion has zero casualties. That's technically true, if you don't count the Eighty-Six as people. Behind the republic's pristine walls, the silver-haired Alba live comfortably while an entire ethnic group is shoved into an unofficial 86th district and forced to pilot mechs in a meat grinder of a war the government pretends doesn't involve human lives. Into this mess steps Vladilena Milizé, a young Alba major who actually gives a damn. She's assigned as the remote Handler of the Spearhead Squadron, led by Shinei Nouzen, a quiet, battle-hardened captain nicknamed 'The Reaper' because everyone around him tends to die. Lena wants to treat the Eighty-Six with basic human decency. They've learned not to expect it. That tension between her idealism and their reality is where the show lives, and it hits harder than you'd expect from an 11-episode TV series. A-1 Pictures brings gorgeous animation to the mecha combat, but it's the quieter moments, the weight of systemic racism, the cost of being disposable, that stay with you. The soundtrack is genuinely beautiful and knows exactly when to twist the knife. If you liked the political edge of Code Geass or the way Iron-Blooded Orphans made you care about child soldiers, this is in that lineage. It's a war story, but it's really about who gets to be called human.

La muerte de Kaie desnuda la hipocresía de Lena: se preocupa por los 86 pero ni sabe sus nombres reales. Theoto la destruye con la verdad y ella no puede sostenerla. La incomodidad que me generó sea tan real como la de ella. Emotivo y necesario.

Love how they portrayed the different worlds by the 2 main characters. Different kinds of mecha anime, love it. Watched it twice!
I think this is my best anime focusing on military as well as camaraderie with other troops showing how the challenges of team 86
At first, I thought 86 was just going to be a cool military anime, then the episode slowly hits you with how cruel the Republic really is. The whole “there are no casualties” thing becomes horrifying once you realize who’s actually dying in the war.
The way this episode ends causes uncertainty, a void is felt, since it is unexpected that the entire squad survived considering the number of members who died before.
People really need to check every detail of each episode of 86, especially the first one which is establishing so many factors that every viewer needs to keep an eye on to appreciate everything. It's a very well-crafted episode.
Absolute cinema. The 86's peace is so abruptly cut, and the ensuing chaos is shocking and heartbreaking. When Lena finally steps into where the 86 once lived their life, it's hard to not get watery-eyed at the entire next ten minutes that ensues. Can't wait to watch the sequel!
Another great episode, despite being much slower - which is the best part. We finally see how the 86 look like without the ever-present threat of death, but all the same, their somber lives are brought to life through excellent direction and animation.
The show's most climactic showdown yet. A very hype battle eventually leads to a surprisingly emotional finale. But then you realize the episode isn't over yet... and a second half of the episode leaves you shocked, but wanting more. And I do.
This episode was slow paced and a breath of fresh air.It was amusing to watch the remaining 5 soldiers walk freely ,enjoy a warm bath and sleep peacefully. I love the fact that Fido reminded them of their past memories too.
I cannot believe that the Spearhead Squadron are finally free. It was an episode filled with a lot of emotional roller coaster. For a moment I thought Shin would die! I love how Lena discovers a way to finally help and free them!
I was not ready for the plot twist.From Annete's father developing the Para-RAID system,commiting suicide and Annete taking over the research to finding that the 86 need to die so as to protect the Republic's reputation !
What do you mean soldiers sent on missions aren't meant to survive? Shin and the rest of the 86 have been sent to fight with the Legion to meet their death .It is heartbreaking to know that the cycle has been going on through the years!
