At first, I thought 86 was just going to be a cool military anime, then the episode slowly hits you with how cruel the Republic really is. The whole “there are no casualties” thing becomes horrifying once you realize who’s actually dying in the war.

People really need to check every detail of each episode of 86, especially the first one which is establishing so many factors that every viewer needs to keep an eye on to appreciate everything. It's a very well-crafted episode.

They say great directing is invisible, but 86 could be the exception. I rarely see anime use such creative direction with their scenes, and it makes the contrast between everyone's daily life and the war so visceral. The premise is captivating, and the presentation top-notch.

The start of this show hooked me immediately. I liked how they show two perspectives, one from a bright and peaceful side, and the other is full of war. The contrast shows how their society put themselves at the pedestal which made me feel unfair and pity those outside.

Episode 1 Introduced us to Major Lena who is suddenly appointed to be the handler for the spearhead squadron. This episode also introduced us to "Undertaker" that has a reputation of destroying commanders who commanded him.

The Republic says this is a “no-casualty” war, but that’s a lie. Real people, the 86, are fighting and dying. Lena treats them like humans, but Shin, “The Undertaker,” already feels like a ghost. The mercy-kill scene? Cold and heartbreaking. Chilling start for the series.

In Ep 1, Lena is very passionate and free-spirited. She’s assigned to the Spearhead Squadron after their previous commander retires. By the end of the episode, we’re introduced to Undertaker, who comes across as cold and emotionally distant. I can’t wait to see what unfolds next!

EP1 of 86 feels painfully real. The worldbuilding is so natural you just get how their society works. It mirrors our own social conflicts and really challenges your morals. It made me step back and see parts of reality from a different perspective.

Who is Undertaker?” Episode 1 hits hard silence, static, and that empty stare of a soldier who’s already accepted death. Shin isn’t a hero; he’s a ghost walking through war. Lena speaks of hope, but his voice sounds like goodbye. Chills every time.

Main characters were revealed as the conflict started in this here. You'll learn why the 86er captain is named the Reaper. Animation during the fight scenes was cool. Lena was amazing when she shared the sad reality about the 86ers to new recruits. It keeps viewer to watch more.

S1E01 provides an overview of the characters and some of their roles. "Lena" as the new commander of the Spearhead Squadron seems to have the knowledge that these units per squadron are not just machines or AI.

EPISODE CONTEXT

As the first of eleven episodes, 'Undertaker' is pure foundation — it constructs the political and emotional framework that the entire season depends on, introducing both leads on opposite sides of a system neither fully controls. The connection between Handler Lena and the Spearhead Squadron begins here, setting up the evolving dynamics, personal stakes, and moral reckonings that will escalate across subsequent episodes.
