What do you mean soldiers sent on missions aren't meant to survive? Shin and the rest of the 86 have been sent to fight with the Legion to meet their death .It is heartbreaking to know that the cycle has been going on through the years!

It's hard not to get watery-eyed with this episode. The excellent direction amplifies everyone's emotions all throughout. It's rare to see any media, let alone an anime, show so much of the human, tragic side of "hopeless" war-stories like this. One of the best eps so far.

Finding out the real purpose of the Spearhead Squadron crushed me. Part of me hoped it wasn’t true, but after everything we’ve seen from the Alba, I can’t say I’m shocked. I really respect Raiden and the others though. They see the reality clearly and don’t let it decide for them

This episode exemplified 86’s thoughtful, compassionate approach towards portraying the horrors of war. Lena began to worry that the burden on the remaining members would increase day by day as they continue to take casualties.

This episode feels like a short, bittersweet dream. The fireworks were beautiful, and seeing them genuinely happy for once really hit me. But the truth hurts, Spearhead is basically a unit meant to die. Even so, they choose to fight with pride. Hope and despair clash hard here.

This episode felt like a fever dream. It was so nice to see them happy once in a while. I love how heavy it is when they talked about being remembered. I got very emotional in this part. I loved how they celebrated which is a great contrast to the war.

EPISODE CONTEXT

Positioned at episode 7 of 11, this is the emotional fulcrum of the season—deep enough into the story that the stakes feel personal, early enough before the finale stretch that revelations here carry forward with devastating weight. It builds directly on the challenges the Spearhead Squadron faced in Episode 6, using that aftermath to excavate deeper character motivations and the systemic cruelty of the Republic. Everything established here—the bonds, the grief, the quiet resolve—feeds directly into the escalation beginning in Episode 8 as the squadron moves toward the season's endgame.
