Nippon Sangoku: Ohga Wajima – Dictator Who Changed the Future of Seii

A dictator who changed Seii’s fate—Ohga Wajima’s rise in Nippon Sangoku shows how one ruler reshapes the destiny of the Three Nations.
Nippon Sangoku aired its Episode 4 on April 28, 2026. Just like the previous episodes, it was an amazing one, not only does it continue the journey of the main character, Aoteru Misumi, but it also puts a strong focus on Ohga Wajima. After the release of Episode 4, the internet went viral over Nippon Sangoku once again, and the reason is simple, everyone was left stunned by Ohga Wajima in just one episode.
After watching Episode 4 myself, I became one of the people who got completely stunned by Ohga. Ohga is an incredible character, not only does she have absolute beauty, but she also carries every characteristic of a wise ruler. It is hard to put into words just how amazing Ohga truly is, but she is genuinely a remarkable person in the warfare era and a precious leader for the people of Seii. After Episode 4 alone, she has now become my Oshi!
Ohga made an incredible move for the future of Seii and its people in Episode 4 — the coup d'état. Following the coup d'état, Ohga is now officially the dictator and new ruler of Seii (聖夷), one of the three nations. Since the upcoming episodes will feature wars between Yamato (大和) and Seii, there is a high possibility that Ohga will become the main antagonist of this season. And since the story ahead will heavily focus on Ohga, it is better for us to do some "homework" before things get even more chaotic.
Before diving deep into this post, I understand what everyone is worried about. Although Nippon Sangoku is based on a manga, I want to ensure everyone gets the best experience possible — so this post will contain no manga spoilers. However, since this post focuses on the new dictator of Seii, Ohga Wajima, it does contain episodic content. If you want to avoid all spoilers, please stop scrolling and leave now!

Ohga Wajima and the Coup d'état — What Did Ohga Actually Do to Seii?
Ohga Wajima pulled off something incredible in Nippon Sangoku Episode 4 — she successfully executed a coup d'état. Since this post will mention the term "coup d'état" frequently, let's first talk about what it actually means. According to Google, a coup d'état, or simply a "coup," is a sudden, often violent, and illegal seizure of power from a government, typically carried out by a small group such as the military or political elites. In Nippon Sangoku, this means that Ohga Wajima and her team launched an attack on the old government — and she succeeded, establishing a new government of her own.
Since Ohga and her team had an overwhelming victory in Episode 4, we as viewers might think the whole process was easy, but in every country, across every era, a coup d'état is no laughing matter. It puts everyone around you at stake, and if it fails, the only thing awaiting you is an endless hell. In the world of Nippon Sangoku, although it is set in a future timeline, Japan has already fallen into decline, so people now only use pistols and swords to fight and wage wars.
While it may seem like conducting a coup d'état would be easier when everyone is armed with the same weapons, it is actually quite the opposite. Without snipers or any long-range modern weapons, the outcome of a coup d'État is no longer determined by weaponry, but by the people. In a world without snipers or any long-range modern weapons, people need to be strong — physically, with great stamina, skilled in both swordsmanship and shooting — and mentally, brave enough to take every risk, unfazed by whatever happens, free from constant worry, and fully committed to the plan and its true purpose. Only then do you have a chance to succeed in a coup d'État.

While the anime shows us a complete victory, it is only because Ohga and her team were physically strong, determined, and well-prepared. Otherwise, there would have been a lot of bloodshed — or worse, they could have lost and faced execution. Ohga is a clever person; she of course knows what would happen if she failed, and what would be waiting for her the moment she chose this path.
Since Ohga did not show any worry on her face throughout Episode 4, we do not really know whether she felt scared. But in reality, Ohga is still a young girl, just slightly older than the main character, Aoteru Misumi, so there is no way she felt nothing throughout the entire process. From Episode 4 alone, we can truly feel just how incredible Ohga is. For the people and future of Seii, she did not hesitate — she conducted the coup d'état and completed it brilliantly.
Ohga is also a truly talented leader. Throughout the entire process, she did not lose a single one of her men and only eliminated the most important figure standing in her way. Targeting only the key figure was a crucial decision — it was the most efficient way to prevent unnecessary sacrifices on both sides, while also leaving a strong impression on the people of Seii. Beyond showing us a perfect plan, Ohga also demonstrated her remarkable ability to handle every situation and deliver brilliant speeches in the aftermath of the coup d'état. All of her actions helped her formally claim her place as the new ruler of Seii, and she had everyone believing in her.

Ohga Wajima and Seii — What Changes Did She Bring to Seii?
After winning the trust of the people of Seii, Ohga immediately brought a sweeping wave of changes to the nation. Among all the changes she introduced, there are three major ones worth remembering, as they will directly affect the stories ahead. The first major change is that Ohga transformed Seii from a republic into a dictatorship. Before the coup d'état, Seii was actually a republic, but Ohga brilliantly transformed it into a nation under her own rule.
This is quite significant for Seii, as a unified nation is definitely stronger than a republic in the warfare era. While it may be hard for us to understand, we need to look back at Seii's situation. Before Ohga — it was difficult for Seii to stand against Yamato, as the different regions were disconnected and did not work together, making it nearly impossible to mount a unified resistance. But now, with everyone under Ohga's rule, every region can move in one direction, and the bonds between them have grown stronger than ever.
The second major change Ohga brought to Seii is the expansion of the farmer-soldier system (屯田制度). For those who have watched the previous episodes, you should already be familiar with this system — it is the same one Aoteru suggested to Ryumon during the trial. Although Ryumon was quite impressed by Aoteru at the time, this system is actually not that unique. This aligns with my observation in other posts, there are characters besides Aoteru who had come up with the same idea.

Although Aoteru and Ohga came up with the same idea and both succeeded, they actually share different goals and had different effects on Yamato and Seii respectively. For Yamato, the main goal is to increase the number of soldiers, while for Seii, rather than increasing numbers, the main goal is to reduce crime rates and help the unemployed. In Seii, the number of soldiers is not a problem — but unemployment is. So by expanding the farmer-soldier system and increasing the population of farms and fishing villages, Ohga was able to cut unemployment efficiently.
With all her plans now succeeded, Ohga is able to focus on her next goal — the last major change she brought to Seii: the Seii westward expedition. Ohga is an amazing leader who knows the best way to rally the people of Seii — by giving them a common enemy. This is a very common and effective strategy among politicians, as creating an enemy is the best way to gather and unite everyone behind a single cause.
Ohga has set Yamato as the enemy of Seii, and now everyone is moving towards that goal. Although everyone believes in her, Ohga is only human in the end. While I loved her performance in Episode 4, invading Yamato may not be the wisest choice. It is logical on the surface, targeting the biggest enemy once all preparations are complete, but this is a three-nation world. No matter how strong Seii is, or how weakened Yamato may be, if the other two nations were to join forces, Seii could suffer a devastating loss in the episodes ahead.

Ohga Wajima and the Future of the Three Nations — What Will Happen in the Upcoming Episodes?
In the final part of Episode 4, we learned that one month later, Seii will launch the westward expedition and invade Yamato. Ohga is a talented person, her coup d'état was brilliant, and I definitely love this character — but to be honest, the chances of her winning the whole game are quite low. This is not because of any lack of quality in her or her team, but simply because this is the Three Nations — every country is strong, and no one can wipe out the others easily. While I personally believe she will have a few brilliant victories, just like in the real Three Kingdoms, every nation that still stands is strong. If they were weak, they would have been wiped out a long time ago.
Ohga is a dictator, and she is quite similar to Napoleon — both are strong in warfare, loved by their people, and have brought significant changes to their nations. However, they also share the same weakness: becoming too tied to their country's fate. It is definitely a good thing for a ruler to be loved by the people, and for the people to follow everything the ruler says, but if the ruler becomes too invested in wars and keeps personally participating in them, the story will take a very different turn.
In most situations, the role of a ruler and the role of a general who participates in warfare should be kept separate — while there are a few exceptional emperors throughout history who could both fight and rule effectively, these two responsibilities are best handled apart. The reason is simple: if the ruler dies or something happens to them on the battlefield, the entire country could lose everything in an instant.

Although I love this character, and it is truly admirable that she carries such confidence, anything can happen in warfare. Currently, Ohga is too tied to the fate of her country, if anything were to happen to her, in the worst case scenario, everything she built could collapse in an instant, and the other two nations could invade Seii together and tear it apart. Even within the army itself, everyone loves Ohga deeply, and while that may seem like a great thing, if anything were to happen to her, would they truly be able to stay calm and carry on as if nothing had happened?
If Ohga had family or children, then even if something were to happen to her, she could leave the country in the hands of those still alive — but it seems like she has no family members and is currently single, making her position all the more dangerous. Right now, Ohga has to personally oversee everything, and if anything were to happen to her, Seii would collapse. Yamato, on the other hand, does not face the same problem. Even if something were to happen to both Ryumon and Taira, as long as Fuji III is still alive, everything could be rebuilt and the nation could carry on as if nothing had happened.
Yamato and Seii are not on equal footing to begin with — and that is what worries me most about Ohga. Since I love this character, I truly hope she can survive and thrive for as long as possible, even within just this season. However, invading Yamato is simply too dangerous, and the chances of Ohga losing everything remain high.

Ohga Wajima and the Real Three Kingdoms — What Are the Results of the Westward Expedition?
In Nippon Sangoku Episode 4, there are scenes where Ohga delivers wonderful speeches that encouraged and united the people of Seii. The speeches are wonderful — I definitely loved them — but at the same time, they reminded me of a real historical figure from the Three Kingdoms era: Liu Bei, the founding emperor of Shu Han.
Personally, I feel that Ohga is quite similar to Liu Bei — both possess high moral qualities, are willing to go great lengths for their people, and have done a lot for them in return. They love their people, and their people love them back. After everything they have been through, both Ohga and Liu Bei became deeply tied to their people and their country, and now, remarkably, they are even doing the same thing, although their goals and reasons differ.
Even though the war in Nippon Sangoku has not started yet, both Ohga and Liu Bei share a striking parallel — both invaded other countries during a three-nation era, all while shouldering two roles at once. In the last war Liu Bei participated in, even after he had become the true emperor of Shu Han, he still personally took to the front line and fought against his enemies. Coincidentally, their respective enemies — Yamato and Fuji III on one side, Wu and Sun Quan on the other — had plenty of capable generals and did not need to personally participate in the front line at all.

As I mentioned before, I believe Ohga will have some brilliant victories — but the chances of her becoming the final champion are quite low, as Liu Bei has already shown us the harsh realities of such a path. During the war against Sun Quan, Liu Bei had a few victories, but the deeper he pushed his invasion, the easier the enemy's goal became — kill Liu Bei, and the war ends immediately. For better or worse, Liu Bei was the centre of everything, and no one could afford to lose him. So after successfully trapping Liu Bei, Wu turned the tables, and the war ended with Liu Bei's defeat.
This situation looks strikingly similar to what Ohga and her team are facing. It may be easy for her to secure a few early victories, since currently no one in Yamato really knows about her, but the deeper she pushes her invasion and the more victories she claims, the more her name will spread across Yamato, and the traps will begin closing in on her one by one. Ohga is no different from Liu Bei — once the trap against her is set, her entire team will become the prey, and there may be no escape for anyone.
You may think I am overstating, but in fact, after Liu Bei fell into the trap and was defeated by Wu, Shu Han was never the same. It is definitely an incredible thing to fight alongside your own team and claim brilliant victories, but once the roles of ruler and general are merged into one person, it becomes extremely risky. An army can lose any number of generals — or even all of them — in war, and the country can still recover. But once a country loses its ruler, everything will spiral out of control.

Conclusion
Ohga Wajima is an amazing character — even within just one episode, she is able to make everyone fall in love with her, root for her, and want to fight alongside her. Since she is currently my Oshi, I hope she can at least survive through this season, but once the war begins, anything can happen. As viewers, we have witnessed everything Aoteru has faced, and of course we wish for Ohga to take over Yamato — but Taira is not someone we can underestimate.
Taira has ruled Yamato for many years, with key roles filled by his own trusted men, his power and true strength are as unpredictable as a real historical figure he resembles, Dong Zhuo. As a fan of Ohga, I will keep rooting for her and hope she can at least defeat Taira in the upcoming episodes. But since what will happen is difficult to predict, all we can do for now i
